My close relatives gaves us money but my friends, bridal party, younger cousins and parent's frieds gave gifts.

We got equal money and gifts at our e-party. And the value/amounts varied greatly.
We didn't have a huge e-party, only bridal party and immediate family.

It was pretty much split down the middle our friends gave $ and our family got us presents off our registry from fortunoffs...

Our E-party was a surprise party that my MOH (best friend) and my BMS threw for us. At that point we hadn't registered yet so everyone gave us cash, which was great for us since we really needed it at the time. We also rec'd some great other gifts that we needed, like an awesome camera and some beautiful figurines. It was such a great party

our e party was about 25 family members (most of our families live out of state) and about 75 friends, so the majority of our gifts was cash. but we still got a fair amount of presents. id say most family gave presents and most friends gave $$

I got more money than gifts.. in total, we got alot more than we thought.. we weren't expecting anything.. we just wanted tohave a big old party!

My sister (w/ help of parents) threw us a small backyard BBQ surprise engagement party. FH and I didn't want to have one b/c we didn;t want people to feel they needed to give a gift. She specified on the invitation in lieu of a gift bring an old photo of either the bride or groom. So now we have a lot of picture frames with some great pictures!!(FH doesn't know what to do with all of them) -but some people still gave $$ or a gift.

FMIL says that you gets gifts for bridal shower and engagement party, wedding it is proper to give money. Just my.02...

I was actually surprised with how many gifts we got. A lot of people took the time to go to Fortunoff's and get stuff off our registery. We got a lot of our crystal items - ice bucket, water pitcher, etc. We also got some everyday stuff.

We got a lot of small keepsake type gifts, accompanied by money most of the time.

We were unable to have an engagement party but, once the official announcement went out the gifts starting coming. I didn't get any money but the gifts are really nice. I got crystal, silver and jewelry---my grandmother says this is traditional. I think either is nice, it is a gift. I was quite taken that people were so thoughtful.

Strangely everyone from my side gave money or gift cards and everyone from his side gave gifts.

My advice would be to register so that people will buy gifts you want rather than just buying something. Otherwise you might end up with 20 vases!
