How do you feel about using a monogram (my first initial, married last name initial, his first initial) on a wedding invitation? I read somewhere that it isn't 'proper etiquette' because we are not married yet. But I really like how it looks! What do you think?

Re: Mongrams
It is not proper etiquette to use your combined monogram until after you are married. At the time when you issue your invite you are still single. I used my first initial and his first intial instead. Plus I was not changing my last name so we really don't have a 'true' monogram. Some girls will tell you that they did it and everyone thought it was great or that they don't care about etiquette- and both of those statements are true. It is up to you if you care or not. I did.
edit to say: you can use your full monogram on your thank you cards after the wedding.

Re: Mongrams
I like that idea - I am thinking about doing a monogram on my invitation but the invitation I am leaning towards is a big square (5X5?) and I don't know how a monogram would look on top of an invitation that size.

Well, I wouldn't do it, because it isn't proper. When you are issuing the invitation, you will still have your last name, so the only way for a monagram to be correct would be to use two monograms with each of your initials, or create one using only the initials of your first names. If you really love it, save it for your thank yous.

I am doing it, It is an invitation asking people to join you on a day you will become married and that monogram will happen on that day. I don't agree on the proper etiquette of this one. Also, one thing I have learned in this wedding planning is sometimes you agree with old school proper etiquette and sometimes you don't go with what feels right to you and what you love.

PS I just searched my etiquette book and could not find anything on this subject.

Re: Mongrams
Etiquette-smedicate! Do it! I used our married monogram blind embossed on our invitations and it is great! Very subtle but still noticable. To be honest though I did debate between the two monograms and decided that using only the brides on the invite was kind of one-sided. Yes, my parents are hosting and their names are on the invitation, so yes, officially it should have been only my monogram, but to me that seems a little selfish. I mean, there would be no invitation, no monogram, no wedding without the groom!! So I decided on using our monogram instead of mine and it is a theme throughout my wedding on my programs, placecards and table numbers.

Re: Mongrams
I am glad someone posted this, as my invite has a monogram.
Is is considered bad luck or just not appropriate?

Re: Mongrams
I don't think anyone thinks it is bad luck, but since you issue the invite as a single person your monogram does not really exist. You can use it on menus and things that are used AFTER the ceremony.
I know many times we say we don't care what etiquette says/states but just remember that statement when you do not get a gift from a guest or someone doesn't send you back a reply card until a day before the wedding.

Thanks Michelle.
I did not really think of it that way.

Re: Mongrams
Yes Thanks, although I was not planning on getting mad at anyone for not giving a present, I think its rude for me to EXPECT one and I also realize that there are some people that will not RSVP...I know that will save me some stress later on since I am fully prepared to make some phone calls.

Re: Mongrams
Our monogram is also on our invitation. When we ordered them we did not even think of the fact that it is not our monogram yet and ya know what? Who cares? The invitations are out and they look great. We've gotten lots of compliments on them and not one person has said, 'hey, that's not your monogram yet.'

Re: Mongrams
I have a monogram on my response cards and reception cards. I love it, I did not realize it wasnt proper. However I keep getting positive feedback from those who have seen it. I guess it is a personal preference.
