Monsignors and Reverends and Priests ... oh my!

We are having an interfaith wedding.

I know who I want for our Rabbi, I actually found the Rabbi from my temple growing up who retired but still does weddings.

But now we need to find someone to do the catholic side of things. FH is Roman Catholic. Monsignor Lisante seems to be highly recommended on here, so we're going to call him this week.

But can anyone tell me what the difference between a Monsignor, Priest, Minister and Reverend is?!!?

To start off, a minister is not a title in the Catholic church, most Protestant clergymen are called Ministers. Some Protestants call their clergymen Reverend.

A Reverend is a title for a priest, like you might say Dr. John Smith, you would say Reverend John Smith if he was a priest, usually that is for title purposes only...most Catholics wouldn't call a priest Reverend John, he would be Father John or John.

Finally a Monsignor is just another title for a priest in the Catholic Church. Hierarchally, it is a higher title....usually a monsignor is in charge of a whole parish or other religious organization. Hope this makes sense....

FYI Msgr. Lisante is a CATHOLIC priest who just happens to hold the title of Monsignor.
