flush the toilets, run the sinks- both hot and cold, turn on the shower, check the basement (if there is one) for any wetness by the windows, ask how old the roof is....

Its actually great that you are looking at them on such a rainy crappy day because you can see if there are any leaks inside or if there is any water damage on the ceilings/walls

What kind of heat does the house have? Look at the oil burner. Look at the electricity, how many amps does it run. I wish I could be more help but this was really FH's dept, I was lucky he knew all this.
Look at the foundation and if their is a basement at the beams. Check the load baring walls to make sure its straight. Structure is the most important part. Otherwise you really just have to think the layout is right for you.
But don't get overly excited... its the first two you are seeing. The house we bought was probably our 40th, and 2 offers later. It had dropped 100,000 since we first started looking a year earlier, so keep an eye on houses just out of your price range.
