I just received notice that I was accepted into the fellowship program. I'm happy, but also very confused and nervous!! I definately think I want to teach, but I am so scared to quit my job!!! I've been here 7 years, I'm comfortable here, and if I accept the offer I'd have to leave soon!!! It's such a big decison that I thought I've have a little more time to make!! Any suggestios?? Help!!

First of all, Congratulations!!!

How much time do you have before you have to give your job notice? I know it is hard to leave someplace where you are comfortable, but if teaching is something that you really want to do, then you have to take that risk. Can you picture yourself at your current job in another 5, 10, 20 years or do you see yourself teaching? I find teaching to be very fulfilling and every day is always different. I know that I couldn't work in an office. I would hate it. Think about why you decided to apply to the fellowship program. Maybe you could make a list of the pros and cons of each. Good luck!

Congratulations on your acceptance! It's a scary adventure because you are going into unknown territory and leaving the familiar world behind. As a teacher, I know that this fellowship program is pretty competitive and the license requirements for teachers in New York State are getting stricter by the year. This is a fast-track program to get your teaching certificate. It may take a longer period of time to get your certificate if you didn't participate in this program. Would you regret not participating in this program? Are you willing to hold off for a couple of years and try to get your teaching certificate without this program (which could take a couple of years to do plus one semester of student teaching)? Good luck!

Re: more on teaching....

Thanks for your advice, I definately have a lot to think about in the next couple of days. Thursday is an info sesion and maybe they will have more answers for me. My other concern is that they would like for me to teach special ed. I don't know if I could handle that! My question is how can they put someone like me w/no experience in a special ed classroom after only about 4 months of training? How is that allowed and how is it beneficial to the children? What do I know about spec ed? Can I realistically learn what I need to know about spec ed, in a SURR school, no less, in such a short amount of time??? These are some of the questions I'll have to bring up on Thursday. Anything else you think I should ask?
