Mother conflicts

Mother conflicts

My FH is quite active and involved with the wedding process. We are contributing financially to the wedding but for the most part, Id say about 80% is going to be paid for by my parents.

My mother is used to planning these type of things with little or no influence from anyone else. She and I have a hard enough time seeing eye to eye on things but add FH and his family to the mix and it is a recipe for disaster. Especially since his family hasnt not yet offered to pay a thing. They MAY eventually offer some money. They may offer to pay for a vendor, but as of right now they haven't so we are going along with the plans anyway. My mom feels that because FH and I are doing so much leg work, that we are leaving her out of things. We do not sign contracts. We do not make deposits. We just cut out some options for her. She is in a wheelchair and is not terribly mobile. She uses the line 'all I am good for is signing the checks' so often that she brings me to tears. It is hard enough that I am older and dont have the means to pay for this but she makes it worse. I try to find things we can compromise on and it is of no use. She does NOT want FH there or his family when we make decisions regardless of if they give $$$ or not. It is truly unfair and makes me feel like she is making me choose.

FH's mother has a hard time with the fact that I have planned so many things so quickly. My feeling is that as a 35 year old bride, I have given YEARS of though to this day and I know how I want it to be. I think it bothers her and pi$$es her off that she has no control because she isnt paying. She is very negative about things. I know she would not want influence if SHE were making a wedding for her daughters. She also feels bad that she will not be able to give her daughters the fancy type of wedding my parents are giving me. That is not really my issue. I will not lessen my function to spare his sister's feelings. When my mom was a mother MOG she gave $$$ and sat back offering no opinions. This is not going to happen.

FH and I are getting it from both sides. My concern is that this planning process is not fun and may drive a wedge between FH and myself. We decided to do damage control whenever possible. When my mom wants only ME to go with her, I will consult with FH before to form a UNITED FRONT but when I speak to mom, she will think the opinion is MINE. I hate being manipulative and/or deceitful, but I am left with no choice. Two overbearing mothers make this very hard.

Sorry so long. I had to unload.

1st sorry you are going through this unfortunately its not fun at all...

2nd- i dont think it is fair that FH wouldnt be able to come to appts and make decisions despite the fact of who is paying for what- HE IS the groom as you are the bride and you should BOTH be involved...

3rd- Maybe you can ask FH to talk to parents about what they are going to pay for if anything, i know it is not a fun conversation but you need to organize budget-and for your mom too

4th- try as hard as possible to not argue with FH... try to stay united and on the same page it will be easier dealing with both sets

good luck

I am so sorry your going through this I don't know if you read in an earlier post that I had a few weeks ago about my inlaws and the money but I totally understand what your going through and I wish there was something we can do to parents and inlaws to make them all understand things

Sorry you are going through this. But vent away, that's what we're here for!!!

I understand that you are getting flak and aggravation, but I would be thrilled if my mother would pay for the wedding. We are doing it all ourselves and lemme tell ya, it's HARD.

This is not to make light of your situation, however....

I agree with you. I do repect his opinions and i do want him there when we make decisions. Its my mom who doesnt. This is why we decided to allow me to be the spokesperson for the two of usas a united front (even if mom doesnt know). He has to trust me that I will speak up for what WE want. Even if it is to keep the peace.

I am hoping that FH's parents will offer a dollar amount and NOT a vendor. This way we can put it towards THEIR portion of the guest list. It will be easier to choose a menu with them than flowers or photography. Anything aesthetic WILL be an issue for ME.

Re: Mother conflicts

I wish I could afford to make my own wedding completely. But years of bad credit and debt dont make that possible. Now I have no debt but lousy credit. I am fortunate and greatful that I have a family that is providing for me. I am also glad that my mom has experience doing this. But I have ideas and dreams for this day. She says she wants what I want - but what I want, she doesnt like and I am not happy. This should be a happy time and I have nothing but anxiety.

Re: Mother conflicts

Goldi,

I can totally relate, everyone has opinions, my parents are paying for a good portion of the wedding and feel I should do things their way.. well atleast that's my Dad's thinking, my Mom on the other hand is like oh you have lots of time.. umm less than a year Mom???

FIL's on the other hand are in a rush.. not sure why?? since from day one FMIL hasn't been too thrilled with me, she can be very sneaky and with the excuse of 'only trying to help' gets in the way a bit too much.

All I can say is that it is a rare thing when IL's totally get along or agree. They each have their own idea's of what their child's wedding should or shouldn't be.

Remember it's your day, your's and FH and above all else its you two that should be happy, everyone else will get over it!

Hugs!

I know the end result will be nothing short of perfect. What we DON't WANT is it for it to look like Mother Goldi's wedding. We want it to reflect US, our style, and who we are. Right now, it is HER wedding and we happen to be the bride and groom.

I don't agree with whoever pays gets to make the decisions. Further, I don't agree that your FH shouldn't have input. Should he just show up? That's a very antiquated way of thinking and it may be her generation talking. Your mom is offering to pay for a big portion of the wedding as a gift, it shouldn't have strings attached. A gift should be given without conditions. Couples getting married today usually make decisions together/or together and with their families.-Both sides. This nonsense has to stop, it's just plain selfish and rude to you and your FH and his family. I'm sorry to sound this way and I know you love your mom, but I am frustrated for you...

Some hugs...

I agree with you and you are not telling me anything I dont already know. My mother is 73 and is an antique herself. NOT a young-thinking 73 year old either. But unless I let her plan, or make her think she is planning, I will end up with a weenie roast in my back yard as my wedding. No one could possibly be as frustrated as I am. WEll, maybe FH but thats about it.

Also keep in mind that my father is STILL in the hospital in hospice care and is day to day. The fact that he will not be at my wedding is hard on all of us. She herself recently had triple bypass heart surgery and was in the hospital for a month at the same time with my father. So planning a wedding from minute ONE has had a bittersweet feeling.

Thanks for the hugs.

Lots of for you Leslie! Just try to be firm with everyone and have some whenever you need them!

Re: Mother conflicts

Leslie you know we're all here for you to vent!! I understand your mom is paying for everything but she really needs to recognize that it's your FH's wedding too and he absolutely needs to be present during the planning process!!! No ifs, ands, or butts about it! It simply isn't her wedding, honestly I would think about asking her to not bother with the $$$ and just do a small event yourselves if you can't afford something grande. That way you and your FI can do things together without anyone else's influence. I can't believe why some mothers are like this, they both need to realize that what they're doing is actually ruining this time for you and your FH, which is supposed to be joyous!!
