Mother-Daughter or Brother-Sister Dance?? Opinions
Hi Ladies, so at the risk of being too personal I really need your HONEST opinions!!! My parents separated when I was 2 and while my brother's & I spent our early childhood weekends w/my dad, once he realized my mom & him were never going to reconcile he stopped paying child support and taking us anywhere on the weekends. Not wanting us to stay inside allday every weekend my mom stopped making us go over and our relationship progressively deteriorated until he moved to FL (against our begging him not too when I was 16). As an adult I've made the effort to be closer to him so my dad is coming to the wedding, will walk me down the aisle and we'll do the father/daughter dance. So here's where I need advice. I'm INCREDIBLY close w/both my mom and eldest brother (who's also the bestman to my FH). My mom is my bestfriend. She's so funny and amazing, even my FH loves her. The younger of the two older brothers has estranged himself from our family b/c his wife doesn't like us (long very sad story). I'd LOVE to have a mother-daughter dance, but my mom & I are traditionalists and feel that might look weird (you know, two women in dresses dancing together?). I would also love to maybe have a dance w/my eldest brother who really was more of a father to me growing up than my own father ever was, and even now as adults we're super close. This was the kind of brother who was late to school everyday at 6 b/c he'd beg my mom to feed me everymorning & get up early to play w/me everyday; would always bring me everywhere; stayed by my bedside everyday when I was sick in the hospital as a child; and even as an adult when I had heart surgery took off of work to make sure he was there (when my father didn't even call). SO...understandably, I'd like to have a meaningful dance at my wedding with at least ONE person I feel was (and still is) a real parent to me w/out looking too odd. Would it be wrong to have either a Mother/Daughter dance and/or a Brother/Sister dance? I can think of 100 songs who's lyrics resonate for what they've both meant to me (and my FH). What would you do if you had a fairly traditional family? Is one more appropriate than the other? Please help!! Don't worry about offending me. I'll appreciate honest opinions!!

My parents divorced when I was 15 and I am not close to my dad at all. He actually told me he might not make it to my wedding. I didn't ask him to walk me down the isle or anything but told him I would like him to be there. But anyway, my mother has always been there for me, and I am probably going to do a dance with her. Fh's parents both passed away, and he has 2 brothers and one sister. Since he can't do a mother/son dance, I want him to dance with his sister. I think it will mean a lot to her. So to answer your question, I think you should do what makes you feel comfortable or what you want. I personally wouldn't even dance with dad, b/c he hasn't been there. But that is what you want. So, if you want, do all 3 dances, maybe half songs, so it doesn't take up a lot of time. HTH!

Hey D, I truly believe that you should ABSOLUTELY dance with both your mom and your brother! They have been there for you, and I honestly believe that your loved ones will not find it weird to see a mother and her daughter dancing, especially if they know how close you are. Will your mom be walking you down the aisle as well? I think that this is your day and if you want to dance with them, then you should. R

Both my parents will walk me down the aisle b/c we're jewish so that's tradition (one I actually really like).

I had similar circumstances with my father. however, he was not invited to my wedding. I very much wanted to dance with my mom, since she was always there for me, raised me, and has been the best. I chose Wind beneath my wings, which was beautiful. Lots of tears from the guests... My brother cut in half way.. so I got to dance with them both. It's not weird to dance with her, dont feel that way. IT's your day, and it's your memories of your wedding...

I completely agree with the girls. It's your day to show everyone who is important in your life. Don't worry about tradition or what people will think. They will think it's beautiful. Also think of it this way if you dont dance with your mom and your brother will your regret it?? I say go for it! I'm going to dance with my mom as well. We've always had a very special bond and even a song - I'll stand by you which is what we'll dance to.
