So, FH and I have been living together in an apt for 1 1/2 years now and we've been really tight for cash and haven't been able to save much for the wedding. I'm freaking that we won't be able to save enough to pay for everything!
SOOO.. I think we are going to move into my FIL's for the 4 - 5 months before the wedding (our lease is up in May). Has anyone entertained this thought/doing it? We figured it out and we'd be able to save about $10K in those months alone... wish I would have thought of this sooner!
TIA!

Re: Moving in with in-laws
would it be a separate living area or would you be actually living with them? I heart my Future in laws but I would hurt them if I had to actually live with them. Its great that you would be able to save all that money but you also have to think of your sanity as well. sometimes its just not worth the aggrevation and as the wedding approaches you will very stressed about a lot of stuf....

yea i would literally be living in FH's old bedroom... no separate living area... I agree with all of you guys (that i might lose my mind), but i keep thinking that it's only 4 months out of my entire life... would it really be that bad?! (i don't think i want to know the answer to that LOL)

Re: Moving in with in-laws
We're staying with my parents, but we have our own (small) space. It's tough, but think of all the money you are saving. We are putting off getting an apartment until right before the wedding.

FH and I are moving into his parents house..the basement apartment. We really don't have another choice because we are going to be strapped for $ after the wedding. Were hoping it will only be a year we are down there though.

I think that you will crave your own personal time. but you have to have a plan for after the wedding ready to go. I had friends who lived in the in laws house, and it was 'only till the wedding' and two yrs later they are still there you have to sit w them and make them aware that you are not just a guest in the house anymore so you are not going to be tip toeing around and always offering help, when you need to take care of your own stuff. Are they having you pay rent? cause if not watch out for the ' well your staying here for free so what I say goes' line! Good LUCK!

Re: Moving in with in-laws
Are they expecting rent? How will groceries be handled? When all is said and done, will you really be saving 10k? It's one thing to live in an apartment with FILs, but to live *with* them is another. Really sort out the details on this because you don't want things to go bad because of misunderstandings. I know it's only 4 months, but those aren't an easy 4 months. You are planning a wedding and getting down to the wire! It's a stressful time and you have to decide for yourselves whether adding the stress of living with someone's parents will be okay or will break you.

Re: Moving in with in-laws
FYI - if they are difficult parents then good luck!!!
ive been living with my FH parents for the past two years and get this.... we arent even in the same bedroom!!!! granted we werent engaged at first and his parents are very traditional and religious so we cant even sleep in the same room (not saying that it doesnt happen haha)
but it gets very annoying FMIL does not know when to shut her mouth ahhhhh sorry kinda venting a little on here too hahhaa
but its saving us money and thats the best part about it!!

Re: Moving in with in-laws
I think that is a decision that I would not be able to shed light on b/c I would never be able to do it, ever, but that is regarding my situation with FILs.
What about moving to a less expensive apartment and saving from that?

Re: Moving in with in-laws
I just moved out of my FIL familys house in July because it was tooooooo much! Even though we would be saving sooooo much $ on rent that we now pay, my sanity is well worth it LOL! Do what you need to but it can be hard!

Re: Moving in with in-laws
FH and I did think about doing this for a split second but we would either kill each other or I'd take out FMIL. I would say if you and FILs get along really good now and they offered you guys to move in then give it a try but if you guys have to ask and convince them then it might not be a good idea.
Also keep in mind that no matter how old you guys are their still going to think of you guys as 'the kids' so you prob wont have ANY privacy.

Re: Moving in with in-laws
Fh and I spoke about it for about a minute and i coudnt talk about it anymore. For 6 years I pretty much spent everynight there and i really couldnt imagine actually living there... if your only thinking about living there until right after the wedding go for it... save yourself the cash. Just for your own sanity make sure you will be able to get some time for yourself and FH with out his parents breathing down your necks at all times...

I don't care what people say, me and FH wanna live at home up until right before the wedding so we can save as much as we can!! I think its a great idea, and if you are going to save 10K, then I would totally suck it up and go for it!

Re: Moving in with in-laws
FH and I lived with my MIL for almost a year, and I really didn't mind it, she never overstepped her boundaries an always made me feel at home. If you are able to stay with your in laws and save some money for the wedding, then I say go for it.
