would any of you ladies just pick up and move to some random state? not FOR work... not FOR anything else but to just try somewhere other than ny to live. if all of your close family and friends were on LI, would you do it? and ladies who have... what was your biggest fear? and how did it work out?

Re: moving out of state...
We are thinking of moving just for the fact that we could probably never afford a house here. FH also hates a lot of things about NY like the traffic and how crowded it is. Most of his friends moved away already to other states. I originally said I could never leave Long Island because it is all I have ever known, but now a lot of my family and friends are thinking of leaving. My mom and step dad are already looking around at other states and my dad just went to Texas to look at properties. I can't imagine how hard that move will be if it does happen...especially meeting new people. It's sad how having two working adults that have degrees and good jobs can't even afford to live here anymore.

That's exactly why I moved back next to a big city (NY). I got tired of the 'country down South'.

Re: moving out of state...
i totally did that. after i graduated fh and i moved to austin, tx with no jobs, no apt, nothing but our clothes. =0) we stayed with his mom in houston until we found a place and got jobs the week after. little crazy, but oh well.
i have to tell you, i love it. not austin, i'm moving back to ny as soon as this year is up, but the whole moving thing was amazing. you learn a lot about yourself/relationship and figure out things really quickly. and while we both miss ny and are coming back, we're so happy we did this. plus austin isn't bad - it's still fun here. =0)
it was much easier for us though. we're both right out of school with no commitments and i was planning on taking a year off before grad school anyways. if you're more settled, it's harder to do. i'd recommend it if you can though. it's better knowing than wondering 'what if i would have really liked it there?' etc.
plus, if you're renting and don't take much with you, it's not too big of a deal to move back.
that'd be my one big recommendation. rent, don't buy, until you know if you like it there or not.
hope that helped! fm me if you wanna talk!

Re: moving out of state...
I would only move out of state if it was the only way we would be able to live comfortably and enjoy going on vacations. I think it would take a lot of adjustment for me but I think FH would be fine with moving out of state.

Re: moving out of state...
I did exactly that. We decided that LI was just too expensive. We moved to NC a little over a year ago. It has been hard to be away from everyone...esp. when planning a wedding. I do fly up a lot and see them and my parents and brother have been down here a few times. It is hard, but we have a beautiful townehouse (new construction) that we never would have been able to afford up there.

Re: moving out of state...
bc of FH's store we cant leave NY but even without that i dont think i could leave NY either - just bc my whole family is here and it would be really hard for me to move very far away from them ( anything over an hour) - we are all VERY close. . and everyone lives in Queens - my cousin just moved to Massapequa and even SHE feels like she is too far away, lol!
BUT FH and I always dream of moving to the Florida Keys - if he ever leaves the store and i can get over leaving my family. . . it would be SO NICE to live there

Re: moving out of state...
I up and left - when I decided to go to grad school. I lived in Illinois - eventually the Chicago area. While it was cheaper in some respects - remember you have to PAY to come back to LI when you want to visit friends/family. I lived in a great city for 3 years and I had very few visits from NYers, people that did visit loved Chicago, but people just don't have the time to take off from work and go to a remote or out of the way place when they could go somewhere else for a week- it'll be up to you to come visit (that's just my experience). My friend from high school lives in NC and she always tells me how much she misses LI, but she's finishing her Ph.D. at Chapel Hill so she's stuck there for a while and the only time I see her is when she comes up here - and I'm not the only friend of her's that really never saw her place down there. I would hate to ever have to move again. My vacation time used to always be spent coming to NY. I'd like to be able to see other places. I would only move if we got some offer we couldn't refuse, not b/c it's cheaper in some respects, but if like FH could get a DM position with his company with a raise and relo expenses.

Re: moving out of state...
I live in PA too! I came out here for college with FH but now that he's graduated, I'm missing everyone back home in Brooklyn SO much!
FH just got a really good job in Maryland so I'll be moving out there with him when I graduate I'm sort of sad that I'll be hours away from the family but I'm in Erie right now, which is 8hrs away ... so I'm used to it!
Part of me is really excited to move to Maryland to start a new life with FH! It'll be fun
