'MTV Comes to East Quogue'

MTV is invading the Hamptons this summer, and those who want to be a part of the summer-long beach party had better come prepared—bikinis, shorts and tank tops are de rigueur.
As the summer season kicks into full swing throughout the Hamptons this weekend, those lucky enough to be chosen will be partying MTV-style on national television at the MTV beach house, located at 42 Dune Road in East Quogue.
Senior Vice President of MTV Productions Tony Disanto, who mentioned that he would be at the party too, said the network is excited to be here—again. MTV had its beach house in Quogue about 10 years ago.
“The Hamptons is great,” he said. “It’s close to New York City, there’s a great vibe and tons of energy. We wanted to tap into that.”
Mr. Disanto said that the beach house is one of the network’s “big programming franchises.” He said they start thinking about “cool spots” early on and checked out various locations. Last year the beach house was in Seaside, New Jersey, and the year before it was in Key West, Florida.
According to Mr. Disanto, MTV is “trying to not only make the beach house a cool thing on television, but also a cool and fun place to visit for the neighbors and people who stop by.
“It’s a subdued summer backyard barbecue,” he said. “We want to create that vibe.”
Mr. Disanto said they have a talent lineup in place for this summer. For example, he said, Beyonce Knowles of Destiny’s Child is guest starring at the Launch Party, which airs on Saturday, along with a “surprise special guest.”
In addition to the musical talent at the Launch Party, Mr. Disanto said a number of special events are planned. He said there will be a countdown of the top 20 hits of summer, and a king and queen of the beach house will be chosen through a series of games, stunts and question and answer rounds. The party Saturday also marks the “kickoff of Spankin’ New Summer Music Week,” he said.
MTV this summer will show its regular weekly programs that are usually taped in Manhattan—the only difference being that they will be taped at the East Quogue house. Among the shows to be taped here are “TRL (Total Request Live) MTV Hits,” where VJ Hilarie discusses the hottest music; trends and clothing with 40 of MTV’s biggest fans; “Direct Effect,” where VJs DJ Clue and LaLa countdown the top Hip Hop video requests of the day; “Say What? Karaoke” and a new blind date show called “Morning After.” The only difference in the shows will be that the participants and audience members will be hanging out around the pool and soaking up the sun in their bathing suits.
A summer makeover is planned for females, either two friends or a single girl, between 17 and 23 years of age, who are willing to get a drastic makeover by MTV with the works—hair, makeup and clothes—all for free.
The MTV crew is also scheduled to go out and “show off the flavor of the town,” Mr. Disanto said. He said the network is working closely with the town and club owners in choosing places.
As guests of the town, Mr. Disanto said he hopes to involve local people on the show. He said casting people are scouring the town and spreading the word. Those interested in appearing on the show can go on MTV’s website and sign up. Girls chosen to be on the show are required to wear bikinis, shorts and tank tops and guys have to wear shorts and tank tops. As stated on the website, girls are encouraged to “look cute.”
Although the events at the beach house look like one big, spontaneous party, Mr. Disanto reminds people that it is something created for TV and it takes a lot of work.
Mr. Disanto said he is in charge of overseeing staff and talent and guiding the creative aspects of the show. He said the number of production staff working during any given show varies. More than 100 MTV staffers from New York City and Los Angeles, local interns and production assistants rotate shifts throughout the day. However, he said a core team of MTV staff, led by Wayne Brooks, runs the show and is always on site during studio hours.
Mr. Disanto said that MTV was fortunate enough to obtain two houses right next door to each other. He said the western-most house is where most of the filming will take place and the other one will be used as a spillover site for office space. Having the second house frees up space in the main house for inside studio room, Mr. Disanto said.
When the party is over for the day, “You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here,” as the saying goes. Mr. Disanto said that although it would be nice to believe that all of the celebrities and guests on the show actually stay at the house, no one is allowed to stay. He said they all go to hotels or other houses.
Mr. Disanto said that because the beach house is a “working studio” it has to be controlled and secure. He said that the network wants to work with the local police and security to keep order.
Mr. Disanto said the network is “very cognizant of the neighbors and we don’t want to annoy anyone.” He said they are grateful to the town for allowing them to come back this year.
“We are looking forward to a great partnership with the town all summer long,” Mr. Disanto said.
