I made this mussel recipe last night and it was so yummy, easy and quick. Here is the link.

preparing mussels?

i have never made mussels before- what does it mean to debeard a mussel?

also- anything i need to watch out for? if they don't open by themselves- they are bad, right?

where do you buy clams from? is it ok to get them from a grocery store? i'm very paranoid about getting food poisoning.

THANKS

Re: Mussels Marinara

Mussels sometimes have a grassy like substance on them or stuck in the shells. Debearding just means, pulling this grassy like substance out. Yes if the mussels/clams do not open then you should not eat them. It means they are dead.

I usually buy my clams from Waldbaums, they have these tiny clams called mahogny clams and they are so yummy. I have a really easy pasta with white clam sauce that I am almost positive I have posted here before. I usually buy all my other seafood from the fish market. I also buy the peeled and uncooked frozen shrimp from Costco. They come in handy.

The only other tip I have for cooking clams or mussels is to make sure you stop cooking them as soon as they open otherwise they will overcook.

Re: Mussels Marinara

I usually don't have to buy mussels because my husband brings them back when he goes diving. However, I would buy them from Waldbaums or the fish market. Whichever is more convinient for me at the time.
