MUST READ for those who are QUITTING SMOKING this New Years! Some helpful hints! YOU CAN DO IT!!!

I know that lots of people are probably going to try to quit this year. I will be clean 1 year as of New Years Day! One of the nicest things anyone ever said to me was by FH. He took my pack and threw it into the back of the car. I looked at him and was like ***? You know what he said? He said, ' I want you to be around for a long time.' So I quit.

I am 37 and had smoked for 25 years. Yup, the math is right! I started smoking at 11. My father and the whole family smoked. I remember being 8 or 9 and going to the store to buy cigarettes for my dad.

It is really hard and it still is. It's an addiction. So just like in AA, NA, and all the others- you have to be committed to stop. Where there is a will there is DEFINITELY a way.

The hardest thing for me was drinking. When I drank I wanted a cigarette more than anything. So ladies, here are some things I did that helped me to quit and I hope it helps some of you. BUT the major thing in all this is YOU CAN NEVER HAVE ANOTHER CIGARETTE AGAIN once you stop. NEVER! You are a drug addict.

In the car- instead of smoking I would eat an apple. Sometimes I ate 3 apples on the way to work and back. It kept my hands and mouth busy. And I had the best bathroom visits in my life from all the fiber!

On the phone- also a tough one. I got a gameboy with Tetrus. Tetrus is a game where there is really no thought needed. So you can occupy your hands and concentrate on your conversation. I went through lots of batteries!

after a meal- don't eat to where you are stuffed. Do you ever smoke after having a small snack? Not really. It's the main meals so keep them small. This combined with the apples will def help with the weight gain.

Take vitamin B and drink lots of water and OJ. OJ is the best. There is something in it that curbs the cravings. I think it's all the vits. Smoking depleats your body of major vitamins.

I used to curse at myself and call myself names. I would say, ' Oh, you want a cigarette. Why? You think the president of the company who is making millions off you gives a crap about you. If you live or die? He dosen't care. You're an farking @sshole to hand over money to a stranger. '

I would ask myself if I wanted to end up like Mr. or Mrs. so and so (my patient) who used to hock these humungusly gross lugies through the pipe in his neck and choke on his own sputum. Or walk around with an O2 tank bc every two inches I walked I wouldn't be able to breath.

Smoking dosen't only give you lung cancer. It gives you liver, bladder, pancreatic, brain, colon, and every other body part cancer. Yup! You heard me right.

***I have to say that unless someone mentions smoking I really have sort of forgotten that I ever did it. I get cravings once in a while but I refuse to go through withdrawrals again. The first two days are easy. It's after that when there is no more nicotine in your body that's the hardest.

I also think it's gross. It's smells and it smells up everything! FH's family is not allowed to smoke in thier own house the night before the wedding bc I don't want his tux to smell like smoke. It's nasty.

So, i'm here if you need me! Please girls FM me if you need any support or have any questions.

GOOD LUCK!!

thanks for posting this Nic!! I started when I was 12, quit when I was 19, and then started again when I was 21......so I agree- DO NOT have even one cigarette after you've quit- you'll be back on it in no time!! I quit again a few months ago and I've been pretty good since then. I'm going to show this to FH.....he's supposed to be quiting....we'll see!!

Smoking causes not only cancer, but it also causes strokes and tons of other medical issues. I hope everyone will quit and kick the filthy habit!!
Congrats Nic for being so strong!

Great tips Jiffy!!
I quit 7 months ago and I've finally gotten used to the idea that I'm not a smoker anymore. One thing that really helped me was the green Stride gum. I have chewed cases of it since I quit. But what really prepared me to take the plunge was reading 'The Complete Idiot's guide to Quitting Smoking'. It was written by people who have successfully quit smoking and understood what you go through. Because, let's face it, unless you have had a cigarette addiction, you don't know what it's like. It's very easy for nonsmokers to say, 'Just quit, what's the big deal?' when it's so much more complicated than that.
