I have a six-year-old beagle (Shiloh) and she another seizure this morning. She started having them about a year and a half ago. The animal hospital where we take all our pets has a neurologist on staff. He said it is not unusual for beagles to start having seizures, typically around five years of age.
He wanted to put her on meds, but we were reluctant because she is still really active and seemed to recover quickly from the episode. Plus, we didn't like some of the side effects of the drug--she would be lethargic, gain weight, and her personality might change.
She did well for a while, but this is her second seizure since the beginning of May. FH and I are now considering putting her on meds.

Friends of my DH have a beagle & she has seizures a lot. They decided not to put her on meds. They said that she seems to come out of them ok and they didn't want to have to put her on meds for the rest of her life.

my old dog was part german shepard and they said it was common in those breeds, we put him on meds. he was on the same meds that human's use for seizures, he used to take them everyday. he would experience the seizures every month, and then after a while of taken the meds they would slowly decrease. it was very scary to see it, i couldn't imagine what it would like to see a person going through it.

OMG I'm so sorry for your little dog..... Do you know if mixed breeds (half beagle) will go through this??? Just curious, Thanks I hope your beagle feels better!!!!

I don't know about mixed breeds. The vet just said that it was common in beagles.
Thanks for the support everyone. I came home from work today and she was her normal, psycho self.

Ahoooww, that is so sad, I have a baby beagle, and am so scared to death, if that would happen. I would try the meds, just to see if it helps.
