My BIL's house burnt down!

Original post by NIHA

I feel so bad for them, they are only married a year and a half, and just moved in last May! They put their hearts and souls into this house, and it went up in flames yesterday, due to an electrical fire. My BIL is injured so is home and his home was his baby. He went out for 1 1/2 and came home to this. Worst of all, their 2 dogs were out on the deck (which is where it started), and were apparently trying to get back in the house, and both died Hardly anything is salvageable, but I heard their wedding album was okay. We spent the last couple of holidays there, because they wanted the whole family to share their new home, they were so generous and gracious when we there. Everything was brand new, all their stuff from their wedding, new furniture throughout, a new deck, outdoor jacuzzi. It's all gone, and they are homeless.

I have no idea what to do for them. DH was with them last night, and we are going there (Westchester) tomorrow. But, with something like this I'm not sure what I can do to help.....

Scott's family has been thru 2 fires. One when he was 8 and they barely all got out alive and were left with only his PJs on

Michele, this is why Scott is so attached to his mementos and sports memorabilia!

Niha, I am so sorry to hear about your BIL's house! Thank God him and his family our safe...except for their pets I pray they can rebuild their lives again soon

I'm so sorry to hear! I would take up a collection from family and friends for them. Like others have said, gift certificates to different store and even more importantly everyone being very supportive and being a shoulder to cry on.

I'm sure in time they will be able to recover all they lost. I was heartbroken when I heard the dogs died! I love my little doggy and couldn't imagine anything like that happening to him! I will pray for them.

Thanks for your well wishes everyone. They live up near Yorktown Heights.

Erica, it was an electrical fire, according to the fire dept it started in the unit that controls the outdoor jacuzzi, the box was located under the deck.

Michele, they don't have a baby, what I meant was the house was my BIL's baby.

I went to target, and instead of filling up a basket, I just got a storage bin, and bought lots of essentials, I thought they can just put the bin in their car. We are going there tomorrow. I think they met with the insurance people today, but I have no idea where they are going to live in the meantime.

A collection from friends and family sounds good, and I'll call the Red Cross tomorrow.

I am so sorry to hear about your BIL and his wife. Maybe you could also get some gift certificates to restaurants. I would imagine that they will be eating out quite a bit since they don't have a kitchen and that can get expensive.
