My BIL's house burnt down!

My BIL's house burnt down!

I feel so bad for them, they are only married a year and a half, and just moved in last May! They put their hearts and souls into this house, and it went up in flames yesterday, due to an electrical fire. My BIL is injured so is home and his home was his baby. He went out for 1 1/2 and came home to this. Worst of all, their 2 dogs were out on the deck (which is where it started), and were apparently trying to get back in the house, and both died Hardly anything is salvageable, but I heard their wedding album was okay. We spent the last couple of holidays there, because they wanted the whole family to share their new home, they were so generous and gracious when we there. Everything was brand new, all their stuff from their wedding, new furniture throughout, a new deck, outdoor jacuzzi. It's all gone, and they are homeless.

I have no idea what to do for them. DH was with them last night, and we are going there (Westchester) tomorrow. But, with something like this I'm not sure what I can do to help.....

I am so sorry

That's always been my biggest fear.

I would bring them some clothes, toiletries, camera to take pics for insurance purposes (they probably did this already). Where are they staying?

I am just so so sorry

Not for nothing.. but you might want to give her (the wife) a bath basket.

When you lose everything it's often strange that is the small things you miss the most and find hardest to deal without.

It's depressing to know you don't have your own toothbrush or hair brush.. It sounds small but it really does hurt.

I think you should try to show them life will move on and things will get better. No one wants to hear that right now and it's useless to say cause they wont hear you. Instead try to show them.

They have to rebuild a home, not just the hard parts and pieces but the life they got used to as well. Insurance can replace furniture, but it can't replace routine.

Just my thoughts...

I'm so sorry to hear this! How unspeakably awful.

Maybe you could get them a gift card to Target or a similar place so they could stock up on the basics that they no longer have. Normally I'd say do something more personal but they need more direct help and now isn't the time for them to be exchanging things that don't suit them.

You could also offer to help them make any phone calls necessary whether it's 'business' type calls to insurance companies or just letting the family know what's going on.

Where are they staying? A phone card might help too especially if they're at a hotel.

I'll try to think of other things.

I had a friend whose house burnt down last year. I got her and her husband a big bag that included toothbrushes, flosss, mouthwash, towels, soap, deodorant, socks, undies, calling card, crackers, fruit etc. She was so grateful...she literally had nothing. You may want to do something like this for your BIL, every little bit helps. I wish them luck!!!

I'm sooo very sorry. I worry about this everyday when I leave home, especially the pets. Things can and will be replaced but that is horrible about the dogs.

My heart goes out to them.

Hey Ron, you think we can come up with some sort of donation fund, etc. for this couple?
