My Boyfriend and I have been talking getting engaged.....

My Boyfriend and I have been talking getting engaged.....

We know we will get married... in the future.. but are not officially engaged.
He asked me yesterday what would I want if I had a choice

He has said before, that WHEN it happens, the proposal, it will HAVE to be very special and a surprise. He also knows tho that I have very specific taste and wants to really make sure I get what I want, because its forever!
So we are laying in bed yesterday morning talking and he asks, do I want
To pick out my own ring, or have him pick one out with hints.
I love thinking and talking about being engaged to him and just smile.. then I say.. you know what I think would be best?
I then tell him...
'I think you need to have Tiffany's close down , and take me in to pick out any ring in the store I want.. just like the guy did in Sweet Home Alabama'

We both started laughing.. because he is forever calling me High Maintance, even tho I really am not.. but that is something I would say just to throw him off.. LOL

Annnyyhoowww....

What would you say, or did you do?

Total surprise, had NO idea of the propsal or ring?
Help pick out the ring with hints and pics?
Pick it out yourself in the store?
Or .. even design it yourself. ?

And, after all was said and done, were/are you happy with your decision?

I really wanted to pick out what my ring looked like.. so I did that and then FH surprised me with it.. but I totally let him know what I wanted.

I designed my ring online and FH had almost an exact ring made up for me. I am very happy with my decision because I am extremely picky about what I like. I ruin all surprises and pick out all of my presents, most of the time. Anyway if I had to do it all over again I would do the same thing, but thats not for everyone. I am very uncomfortable about surprises and FH knows that about me. Good Luck. Let us know how t turns out

ETA: I didn't know about the proposal.

FH knew what I wanted. I had originally wanted NOTHING but the round diamond, nothing else. When he went to the diamond guy - he gave him a band with diamonds in it and he kept saying no, because he knew i wanted just the plain ring... My dad and the jeweler talked him into getting the band saying i'd never turn down diamonds....but he was really nervous because of it.

When I saw what he picked - it was SHOCKED. It's stunning and the most perfect ring in the world for me...it looks antique and i've told him several times that if i had every ring in the world to pick from i'd pick this one.

It's just my opinion - if he knows you well enough - he cannot go wrong...

I let him pick it himself...total surprise...he knows me and my taste...and he did a great job!! But...if you have very specific taste, it might help him out if you just picked out what you wanted. Good luck!!

To me the best thing about my proposal was that it was a COMPLETE suprise. Yes we talked about it but I thought it would happen much later than it did.


I left hints, like a few pics of different rings I liked and we talked about it sometimes. But in the end I love that the ring he gave, he picked, I loved, and it was a total suprise

I gave him some stipulations like 'white gold' 'round stone' and he did the rest.

we did some ring shopping.... everywhere from Tiffany to Roosevelt Field Mall just to get ideas.

Then, he worked with my dad to design a ring that my dad's friend custom-made.

The proposal was a complete surprise!

i loved that it was a surprise!! i cried my eyes out cause i didnt exect it at all. I knew it was comming but i didnt expet it christmas morning infront of my whole family. I wouldnt have liked to pick it out myself. i dropped hints here and there that i only wanted 1 stone. and what shape. but he picked it out all on his own and i love it!

I think I would have been bummed though if the proposal wasn't a surprise.

Before we got engaged, I would always bring him into jewlery stores and point out the things that I liked, and the things that I didnt like...because like you said, the ring is forever right?! I wanted him to be able to say that he picked it out on his own, because he really did. But also make sure that he would be confident knowing that it was something that I would like cause I gave him that guidance. I think that its okay to do that....

By the way....I LOVE my ring, that he picked out!

my ring was a surprise ... it was my fmil's ... fh father had passed away when he was 5. fmil saved it for him and after we were dating for a few years she gave it to hi. I was surprised because of the meaning but also because it was white gold !

wow.. I am grinning ear to ear reading these replies.. I dont know why, its just so sweet to think about I guess! Everyone has such a different experience, and in the end.. all so happy! I love it!

Jeff is extremly romantic and wants to surprise me and just make it so special.
This is the second time around for both of us... but...
life is so different now.... we are now with our soul mates and its so important that we make the other happy.

He said yesterday that he wants me to start sending him links to rings, leave subtle hints like pics of rings I like laying around, in his lunchbox..etc... LOL.
I think that is what I will do.... and see what happens... :)

Right now.. I am wearing a ring he gave me about a year ago. Its a T &co. band...it was his way of showing a commitment to me , kinda like a promise ring. But he wants a big diamond on that hand...
Hey..Im not complaining! :) LOL

(btw.. I actually bought my first so called 'engagment'ring myself because my ex was the furthest thing from romantic..LOL. )

We went ring shopping to find out what i wanted and what looked good and then i designed my ring online, saved it in 'my favorites' and when he was ready he gave it to our friend who is a diamond distributor and he made the ring and then FH surprised me on st pattys day with it!

Well, FH and I had spoken about getting married for a LONG time (we are together 8 years) about a year or 2 before we just stopped in stores here and there and I looked and tried on some rings i liked. I would just tell FH what I liked about each and didnt like. He knew i wanted round, not princess and etc...

I then told him its up to him. For me, I wanted HIM to have the experience of picking it out and such. He had an idea of what i liked and didnt and just told him to pick what he thought i would like AND what he liked.

At least i feel that I got something that i wanted but it also has some of his taste and liking. It didnt take the surprise away for me when i first saw it because it wasn't one that I picked out and told him to get.

He told me the other day that he really enjoyed going to look for the ring, picking it out and etc.. that made me really happy to hear!

BUT Everyone is different!

btw... I think it was your cake I posted on a cakes thread.
I will be using yours as inspiration for my big day.. probaly in 2 years..LOL
But.. its exactly... what I would invision.....

i would just make sure he knows what you want and especially what you don't want. then just let him do it on his own
