My Dog had a seizure

Original post by wo0shply

Buddy had a seizure the other night around 1am, good thing he was sleeping with us on the bed. It was the scariest thing, FH thought he died.

We took him to the Animal Hospital that is down the block from us and the vet said to take him home since we had our vet appointment the next day and if he has another one to bring him back to the hospital.

We took buddy the next day to the vet and took blood to check for kidney, liver failure (common cases of seizures) and thats about it.

All the vets and techs were very calm and were more worried about FH and me... I think its a common thing.

Does anyone else's dogs have seizures?

What kind of dog do you have? I'm not too familiar with this. Sorry I can't help. But I'll definitely say for your dog....

We have a pointer mix... I dont think its common for pointers to have seizures. I think dogs usually show signs between the ages of 3-5 years :( my poor buddy

Awww....so cute. Looks kinda like my doggie...I hope he is okay....How old is he?

Buddy is 5. I think hes ok, hes been really legtharic but it might be from his thyroid... I would love to see a picture of your pup.

Hey!

My dog has seizures. He has had them since he was a puppy. We give him medication everyday and it mostly keeps them under control. . .thunder storms and changes in air pressure tend to bring them on.

He will be okay. . . we keep valium in the house in case he has one (its a suppository (sp) which is kind of gross, but you won't think about it when you are upset - we use a rubber glove)

They usually act really funny beforehand, so we can usually tell by now when one is coming on. We just try and get him to the middle of the room and sit near him until it stops.

I know how scary it is, I'm sorry you went through it

Awww.

I hope he's ok. I'll say a prayer for him tonight that all comes out well. I'll post a pic of my pup later since my pics are on my home computer...

Re: My Dog had a seizure

I had a golden retreiver that had epilepsy. It was scary when she was going to have a seizure. After a while, you could tell that it was coming. She would act weird and kind of clingy- then she would start to drool and shake. It was best to sit with her and pet her when it ws happening. I found that he helped her to ' become herself' again. It always took a while for her to come to and she always drank a LOT of water after the seizure.

The vet put her on medication and it controlled them alot.

How did you find out that your dog had epilepsy?

My vet did blood tests on him and they came out negative for heartworm, kidney failure, liver disease.

So what are they saying caused the seizure?

So far they think its idiopathic which pretty much means they dont know, they dont want to do futher tests since it would be very costly. They said if he has 2 in one month then they would do an MRI.

I hope it was just a one time deal.

Re: My Dog had a seizure

Our family dog Sandy, used to have grand mal seizure. It was scary for us. She would have full convulsions. She was a cocker spaniel/ poodle mix & that was a possible negative trait for the mix. She was a sweetheart & lived her whole life with it. What I did was remain calm tried to keep her away from anything (during an episode) that she could accidentally hit & hurt herself. I tried to always remain calm & speak to her in a calming voice. I wasn't sure if she could hear during the seizure but I noticed that if I was there & had a calm presence it seemed to help. She usually was out of it after the seizure, sometimes she had hard breathing, far off gaze, stiffness, afterwords. The seizures drained alot out of her, but after some rest she was right back to her hoppedy self. The vet said that sometimes diet & medication helped. IN her case they weren't common (more brought on by extreme excitement & too much stimulation (like is we had party guest, we would keep her in the other room & introduce her after people arrived & were settled), so we didn't want to medicate her.

Your lil baby will be okay. it is scary for us humans. I will be sending her good vibes so she gets better
