My dress is in, but I'm sad (LONG...sorry)

My dress is in, but I'm sad (LONG...sorry)

I got a message today that my dress is in and I have to pick it up within 10 days! It wasn't supposed to be in for another 2 months, but it came in early. I was really excited about it until I realized that I have to tell my mother. My mother has been so unsupportive of almost everything having to do with this wedding since the beginning. I think a lot of it has to do with her own guilt over not being able to pay for my wedding (which I couldn't care less about - I don't want my parents to spend their money on my wedding, as they have sacrificed so much for me already in my life) as well as her inability to control every little thing I do. When I told her that I had found my dress, she was so miserable about it and made me feel like crap. She told me that there was nothing precluding me from looking around further because it was more money than she thought I should spend (my father really wanted to pay for my dress and I was hoping that he wouldn't have to spend more than about $500, but it just didn't work out). I told her that the fact that it was THE ONE was what was precluding me from looking around further, but she still made me feel bad.

I had to order the dress without her even knowing and have paid for it by myself (I told my father about it and told him he could give me money towards it or not and that I wouldn't be offended if he chose not to). My mother made it very clear to me that she didn't want to hear another word about my dress until it was all said and done, so I didn't tell her when I ordered it. Meanwhile, I was going to tell her about it this week, but I just got the message today that it was in, and I called to ask her to come with me to pick it up, and all she did was b*tch about where I was going to store it and that I ordered it too soon. They may be discontinuing the dress, so I wanted to order it sooner to be on the safe side, and besides, it wasn't supposed to be in until sometime in February. They can't store it at the store because they don't have the facilities for it, and she complained that they told me 12-14 weeks and it came in at about 4 weeks, so they should store it for the amount of time they told me I would have to wait and that I should tell them that I couldn't pay for it for another 10 weeks or something like that. I told her that it was already paid for and she asked me what they would do if I didn't pick it up in 10 days. Why should I have to risk anything when the dress is paid for in full and why shouldn't I have it in my possession? Then she started in on how she was going to be worried about something happening to it for all these months because it's going to be stored in her home and she's responsible for it. I just can't win.

I asked her if it would be OK to ask my FMIL if she wanted to come with us to pick it up and she didn't even answer me and just asked what I was going to do about all the other stuff (veil, shoes, etc.). I told her I didn't get any of it yet, and what the heck did that have to do with asking FMIL? At least FMIL was excited for me when I showed her the dress and actually cried. My own mother made me feel like sh*t and made me cry over it.

So now I get to go pick up my dress with my mother and hopefully FMIL and know that she's going to make me feel like crap the entire time. Not to mention that I know I've gained some weight in the last month or so, and I have a feeling the dress is going to be a bit snug, and she's going to give me crap about that, especially since I didn't try it on when I ordered it (I tried it on 2 weeks before that and I ordered it in the size I tried on which fit perfectly).

I should be so excited about this, but instead, I feel like crying. I just wish she would get over whatever her issues are and be supportive of my decisions and be happy for me. How sick is it that I can't even discuss my wedding gown (let alone any other details of the wedding) with my own mother?

I'm sorry to hear your mother is not being supportive. Could there be another reason why? Is she not happy that you are getting married? Maybe you should have a heart to heart with her, before you pick up your dress. Tell her you love her and want her to be involved in planning one of the most important days in your life. Unfortunately you need to address this with her or it will continue to be a tough road til your wedding. Good Luck!

Some hugs for you!

I know it is very hard to fight with mom over these things - my mother simply had NO interest in going shopping for MY dress and kept telling all my BM's that they shouldn't be bullied into going with me and that they MUST be BORED out of their minds - they were VERY upset and angry at her for that. She only wanted to look for her dress.

I know that doesn't compare to what you are going thru but when you fight with mom over things it can really hurt

Please post pics when you pick up the dress!

Thanks, ladies. I really don't think it's that she's not happy that I am getting married. I honestly think it all has to do with money (her lack of it, the fact that FH makes more than both of my parents combined and is half their age) and her inability to recognize that she's controlling and has only driven my sister and I further away from her and that I am now not giving into her every whim and desire when it comes to this wedding. FH and I are paying for it, and no matter how much I try to include her, she gives me her opinion on things (which are 99% of the time the exact opposite of my opinion), and then she says, 'It doesn't matter what I say anyway. You're paying for this, so you're going to do what you want.' I have never made her feel like her opinions are unwanted or ignored, yet she continually makes me feel like this.

that sucks

Wish *I* could come with you to pick it up.. I love your dress and you SHOULD be happy.

I know you want your Mom to be happy about this, but what can you do? You can't make people behave differently.

HUGS!

Thanks again! I don't know why I ever expected her to act differently, since she's always been the eternal pessimist, but I guess the little kid in me always trying to win my mother's approval just won't go the hell away.

On the plus side, if FMIL comes, I know SHE'LL be happy for me and probably tell my mother to put a cork in it for my sake.

I wish I could offer some advice. Just know that all of us here are happy for you, and I hope things get better with your mom. Maybe she is just having trouble with letting you grow up and she feels that by doing this she can still be your mother. JMO.

Sweetheart...first of all... The only thing I can say is this: Do what YOU want to do...don't involve your mom in any more of your plans if she's going to put you thru all these changes...its just not worth it. Pick up your dress, bring it home, store in a safe place, and BE HAPPY!!!!! This is YOUR wedding and its about you and your FH!! Do what makes you happy and avoid stress whenever possible...hope things get better!!

Re: My dress is in, but I'm sad (LONG...sorry)

GRRRRRRRRRRRR! I just got off the phone with my sister. My mother called her and starting bitching about the dress. My sister basically told her that it doesn't matter if she doesn't believe me that almost all of the dresses out there are strapless and that mine is, and that it doesn't matter that I spent more money on it than she would have, and it doesn't matter that I didn't tell her when I ordered it...all that matters is that the dress is beautiful and I look beautiful in it. My mother asked her what if she didn't think it was beautiful and my sister told her to keep her mouth shut then. Then she said that she was going to have to look at it for the next 10 months (you would think it's a friggen corpse or something, for crying out loud!). My sister told her that she's got 4 bedrooms in her house and only one is being used - put it in another one and don't look at it and get the hell over it already.

I love my sister! It totally sucks though that my mother is acting like such a miserable human being.

I am so sorry. I know how you just want that support from your mom. Hopefully she'll come around!

Jann...if your mother is giving you crap about storing your dress...I will have my mother store it for you in her house!! I'm sorry you have to go through this with your mom....

Awwww, that's so sweet! This is why I love this place...I can always come here and find support when I can't get it elsewhere!

I'm sorry that your mom is giving you such a hard time. Do you think that you could find someone else to help you out and store your dress for you?

Can you store it at your FMIL's house?

My mom was a total wench about the wedding at first but then came around....I'm keeping my fingers crossed that your mom does a 180 for you!

Re: My dress is in, but I'm sad (LONG...sorry)

You all are so sweet. I cried almost all night last night (of course, watching that Pepto Bismo wedding, also known as Ryan and Trista's wedding, didn't help either) and I'm still feeling really sad. I also gained about 10 pounds, so I'm feeling fat and sad, which will be sure to make my mother feel somehow vindicated because the dress is sure to look like crap on me this weekend and she's sure to gloat about how she knew it wasn't a dress I should get.

I told my father this morning that I need him to get her to put a cork in it already, because she's just ruining everything for me. He said that she's just giving me her opinion. Well, fine, but she's given it to me 12 times already and I can't take it anymore. I can't believe she still has the capacity to make me feel like this. I'm an adult, with a very serious profession, living on my own or with FH for 8 years, and about to get married. You would think that I would have learned by now that I don't have to do anything to make anyone else happy. What is it with mothers???

I don't think she has enough room, and I don't think I could trust FBIL to either not accidentally ruin it or to not peak and tell FH what it looks like.
