My engagement party is this saturday and I have one more question

I am not sure if people tend to give money or gifts at an engagement party. That being said - if people bring a gift, should we be opening at the party or is it one of those things you open after the party?

(oh yes, and I realize that the party is just a way to get people to celebrate our engagement, I'm not EXPECTING gifts or trying to make money - just curious about proper etiquette/what people expect )

I think it would be the same as a shower, open gifts while people are there...but since it could be both money and gifts maybe wait until its over...I dont think that helped much

me and fi waited to we got home to open gifts. We got about half gifts and the other half cash.

I don't think people expect you to open gifts at an engagement party. We waited and opened them at home.

I would say definitely wait until it's over..... there may be some people who do NOT bring a gift and if you open other gifts while everyone is there, it will make the people who didn't bring anything uncomfortable. open them afterwards and send the thank you's to those who gave gifts.

No, I think you are supposed to wait till AFTER to open the gifts...I have never seen anyone open gifts at an engagement party.

we had ours this past sunday-- we had the 'party' at tellers and afterwards we made an announcement to anyone who would like to come back to FIL's house for a little while-- to relax and watch us open gifts-- so that way, if they are not gift opening watchers-- they have an escape.

and that was that-- so about 25 people came back out of the 100 that were there and it was the close ring of family/friends-- and it was fun! hth

No, I didn't actually tell people that we registered BUT we did have our knot website on the invite which links to your registries and also the RSVP was to my parents who told people if they asked that we were registered.

I wasn't registered yet when we had our e-party so everyone gave us money but some gave gifts too. we didn't open anything until we got home.

We got basically money, just about a few gifts and we waited until we got home to open everything. You are definitley not expected to open gifts in front of everyone.

Glad that u stated this... this seems to be a VERY sensative topic on LIW- where people feel u shouldn't expect a gift.

i think for e- party i would over gifts after the party...

I would open the gifts at home - i never saw a gift opening as part of an e-party - but then again, it might just be my family, or how formal the party is

Our E-party is this Sunday-we are waiting for mostly everyone to leave-then opening gifts. We will only open if someone asks us to do it in front of them.

at our e-party my mom wanted us to open up our gifts there so she wouldn;t have to have everyone back at the house to watch us open. we saved the $ envelopes for home though.
