My engagment Ring Broke...:(

My engagment Ring Broke...:(

I NEVER wear my ring to work just because I work with children who are very active. I scartched a child before, and I dont want to scratch them again..

Someone yesturday said to me Marisa, Why arent you wearing your ring. So today I wear it to work. I am in work for 10 min. I open my draw and hit my hand on the draw and the head of my ring pops off. The diamond is attached to the prongs still. THANK GOD I found the diamond in the drawer.

So I call the jewler and she said she can fix it. Now I dont feel comfortable having it sodered. she said that it was on a peg and I broke the peg. But she can soder it with gold. So much gold that a truck could run over it and it not break.

I LOVE MY RING. but if it breaks once, what makes me think it wont brake again. I only have had this ring since april, and I dont even wear it to work.
She was extremely pushy and insisted that I let her fix it right now. I sorry If this alittle confusing, but Im just alittle upset.

I know there are worse things that can happen. so please dont think that im being silly...

What would you girls do.

I can't imagine it breaking.Personally, I don't think it should have broke and I would go to another jeweler for a second opinion.

Oh my God!!! My heart goes out to you. I would be so upset. First and foremost, go to another jeweler. Im quite the doofus and have banged and smacked my ring around plenty of times. But for the whole head to come off is unbelievable!!! Once you get your replacement, I would SERIOUSLY consider getting insurance for it. You are very lucky you didnt lose the diamond, but dont take chances again. INSURE IT!!!!

I think I agree wtih you. People at work said that they are shocked that it broke. I did not even hit it hard.
I do have insureance. I called the insurance company the day after I got it.

I have had my ring for almost a year and have banged the hell out of it and nothing has happened (knock on wood) I would go somewhere else. I don't know if I could trust the place.

That is shady. Definitely go to a different jeweler and maybe just use the same diamond, but start new with a setting. That way, no worries, new, hopefully more reliable people, and beautiful ring for you!

I agree - I think you should go to a new jeweler and get a new setting. I don't think that setting is safe (prongs attached to a post and sodered on). I used to work with someone who had that type of setting and LOST the diamond because the setting broke!

Good luck!!!

My engagement ring is a family heirloom and I was so upset to find out that the setting was cracked and if we didn't do something the diamond would fall out. It was so fragile that a very reputable jeweler in Garden City wouldn't even touch it. Well, enter the hero--Estate Jewels of Huntington. They were great--they estimated it would take 2 weeks to 'restore' the ring and it came back to me in much less time. I highly recommend them. I figured that if they could restore a 100 year old ring then they can definitely take care of some sodering You should only use someone you feel comfortable with and it sounds like the woman you spoke with left a negative impression. Hope everything works out!

I guess it depends on the setting as to how common that is. I'd go to another jeweler.

My stone was wigly, 3 months after we go it & my jeweler said they'd 'send it to teh home office' & that didn't sit well with me so I took it elsewhere & watched them fix it. They were shocked at how loose it was---they fixed the side stones as a precaution too. It has been 8 months & it is still tight.

That's actually goods to hear. It is a shame they couldn't fix it, when it obviously was fixable, but it is better that they were upfront with you.

Thanks for all your help. When my mom gets home I am going to talk to her.

I told Anthony that If I choose to get a new setting he needs to propose to me again!!!! he chuckled!

Yes, definitely go somewhere else.

Personally, I will not leave my ring. A few months ago FH and I were buyng jewelry for a friend a Tri-County and I asked the woman to clean my ring... I never took my eyes off of it. I even shhhhhed FH.

I say this because a close family member brought her diamond wedding band into a jeweler many years ago and a few years after that went to get it reappraised... well, she was told all of the diamonds were taken out and replaced with CZ.

Girls watch your ring like a hawk!

Re: My engagment Ring Broke...:(

I keep having diamonds pop out of the band in my ring... so far twice in one month!! The jeweler is replacing the setting for me... I think I would freak though if the whole thing broke off... Right now they are putting a new diamond chip in it so I can have the ring until the new setting arrives... I have to wait until Friday to get it...feel so naked without it!!

Re: My engagment Ring Broke...:(

Okay. Not only should you go to another Jewler for a second opinion and then go back to the original jewler and make them fix it for FREE!!! but then you should go to an appraser.

I went to just apprasals in Manhattan (FM me for more info) when I got my ring and they looked at it under all that equipment and showed me where one of the prongs was crooked. He told me to go back to them and what to say and what I should watch for them to do. He also honestly told me that I could live with it, but that if I banked my hand hard the diamond would pop out. So I went back and I watched them fix it. The appraiser is a good place to go b/c they have nothing to win or lose (as long as it's NOT a jewler).

Good luck!

One of my chips fell out in my classroom too... I had all my kindergarteners looking for it on the floor! Unfortunately we used silver glitter the day before, and they kept thinking they found it, but it was just the glitter.... oh well!

I think the fact that she was really pushy is a sign - she knew it should not have brooken, and wanted to get it back fast to fix their mistake/bad work. I would go to someone else...
