Two shows I really wanted to see are closing within the next few weeks, and today FH called me to surprise me with tickets to BOTH!
He says it wasn't that expensive, b/c he got discounts through work, but he's crfazy anyway. I'm so excited

Re: My FH = AWESOME!
Glengarry Glen Ross
and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf
as much as I talk about too many revivials on Broadway these are two I wanted to see. My senior thesis in HS was a scene from Virginia Woolf, and it hasn't been on broadway in 30 years.
The revival boom is over, they say, they only revivka schedules for the upcoming season is Sweeney Todd, which I am looking forward to so much.
It's been so long since I've seen anything professional on stage (over a year).... I'm very excited...

Re: My FH = AWESOME!
Yep, Movin' Out is still open.
That falls into another category I can't stand though, musicals based on the music of a recording artist, as in movin out, lennon, mamma mia. I just wish people would write something original!!

Yeah, Sweeney is the only one scheduled. Now, unfortunately you have 50,000 musicals that just use popular tunes and incorporate them into a crappy story (Mama Mia, All Shook Up, Lennon, We Will Rock You and Good Vibrations to name a few) taking over the Great White Way. Give me revivals of great plays instead please!!!!

I hear that!!!!!! It just seems like in the last 5 years they've revived everything but the kitchen sink, and by the kitchen sink, I mean 'A Chorus Line.' I've actually seen very few original plays. I've seen some amazing revivals though, particularly at the Roundabout.

It is still playing, but it is closing on December 11th.
As much as I agree about there being way too many shows that use unoriginal music, I have to say that I LOVED Movin Out. I went in quite biased b/c Billy Joel and Broadway are two of my favorite things, but I thought the choreography and the story they put together was incredible!

funny, i heard there was going to be a revival of A Chorus Line in 2006. I've seen so many community theatre performances of it, and I'd love to see it on Broadway. It was one of the first musicals I remember seeing as a child.

I think I read it'll be back at the Circle in the Square, but I'm not 100% on that. I'd love to see it, actually.. but I'm just not sure it'll do well. It's become something of a joke. Like the theatre club at my school supposedly kicks you out if you like it..lol Plus it's one o those bare bones musicals so like every high school has done it 42 times.

That is right!!! I forgot that there is talk about reviving 'A Chourus Line'.
I don't hate all 'Jukebox Musicals'. I have enjoyed a couple (Movin' Out being one), but I miss the lack of new works being produced. Producers are afraid to take risks. They think that all audiences can deal with is a bunch of music that they recognize and a light story. It has seeped into casting also. You have to be a 'name' even in smaller theatres. I still love it!!!!

Oh Heidi, you've touched on my third Broadways pet Peeve
Pet Peeve #1 ; Jukebox musicals...BLAH Pet Peeve #2: Big name, mentality, ESPECIALLY bringing in Hollywood names or American Idol runners up, or Boy band singers to play on broadway. Pet Peeve #3: Too many revivials
And it all comes down to one thing. there's no risk taking. No one's risking a new play to stand on its own without familiar tunes or a familiar name on the playbills. I want to see something fresh and new

OOH I want to add that we will see something original in a few months. For Christmas (shhh!) I got Fh tickets for Spamalot! I'm so excited. It has a few big names in it, but they are talented actors, not backstreet boys! VERY psyched.

I agree that there is a lack of original work out there right now. Although in the last few years, a couple of my favorites were Avenue Q and Wicked, which were both original. I HATE seeing all the hollywood or boy band members taking the roles that talented B'way actors should have. There's something I really enjoy about going to the theatre enough that I recognize the names of the actors b/c I've seen them previously in other shows, not b/c I know them from the movies or TV.
Unfortunately, everything comes down to money, and I guess producers are currently in the mindset that they will sell more tickets if they feature familiar names and produce shows with familiar songs. Unfortunately, in reaching out to the population who buys into this marketing, they lose a whole other group of theatregoers, who would rather see original work and genuine talent, regardless of the name!

Spamalot is suppose to be great!! Tim Curry and David Hyde-Pierce have extensive Broadway resumes and Hank Azaria is an amazing actor. I don't mind stuff like that, but the Drew Lachey's and Melanie Griffiths have got to go!!!
