My FH has no class

Original post by nrvbrd

Please brace yourselves ladies I am shocked that this came out of his mouth.

He wants to put on our invitations:

'In Lieu of gifts me and him (insert names)would gladly appreciate a contribution to their house fund'

He is so serious that is the scary part. I politely told him that this is the most inappropriate thing I have ever heard of.

His response: Everbody's wedding is different and everyone does different things. I said yes, everyone's wedding is different but there is a code of ethics which everyone should follow.

I am shocked beyond belief.

It's definitely a guy thing - if they only knew the hours upon hours we spend with this stuff - sweating every little detail, not wanting to violate any etiquette rules!!

Definitely a guy thing. FI did not want to register becuase he thinks it would be better if people just give us cash. He said we don't need any more plates just $$$$.

well ... I have seen that in wedding invitations, you know in some other countries that is common practice, but it is also considered tacky.

I agree its tacky but some people honestly do not realize it. I have received a few invitations which basically asked for cash. I was going to post the last one I got, I knew the ladies here would get a kick out of it. The front said, 'Looking for a gift idea?' inside it had all types of currency listed- dollars, lira, pesos, etc. I was so embarassed for them-truly the tackiest thing I've ever seen. So don't feel bad, your FH is not the worst.

What a no no!! I wonder what he would say to people if they approached him and said that was rude...how would he explain it? That is asking for trouble imo....stick your ground on this one!

Re: My FH has no class

I was off the boards this weekend so I could not reply to this.

I told FH that he must be on crack if he thinks I am going to include this in the invite, and knowing how I am how dare he consider it?

So needless to say problem solved.
We are looking to register soon so this weekend we went around narrowing down stores.

Nrvbrd - I think I might be able to top this one....

Here is the story....We only ordered 60 STD's b/c we are having a small wedding overseas and turns out as the list was growing, we ran out.
Well I said - not everyone needs a save the dat card - only the people who REALLY want to go.
He said (you should be sitting down for this one) 'well for the people that we can't send them to, I'll scan it into the comp. and e-mail it to them'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CAN YOU IMAGINE???????

I told him it was the tackiest thing in the world and HE BETTER NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT THAT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!

so I completely understand

Re: My FH has no class

Just tell him that your family members would spread the word which will owrk just as well. Do not give in because it is tacky to request $$ instead of gifts on an invite.

Good luck

Listen to this...

You can tell how different customs are from one country to another when you experience something like this. I don't know about other South American countries but I know that in Ecuador they place in the wedding invitations a card with the couples account number on it so people can directly deposit money into their account! And this isn't only for weddings. It can apply to communions, christenings, who knows what else... I saw it a couple of times and realized this is normal over there.
If I did that in the US people would laugh! And the clincher (I have to love my mom's family), one of my aunts says Wanda what is your checking acct number so we can deposit money in the acct. for your wedding. I started laughing hysterically. And my mom told her that is not what is done here. Asking for money here for any kind of party is an insult and rude to do.
Forgot to add that my aunt has only been in the US for 2.5 years. She has no idea how different things are here... but is learning.

Re: My FH has no class

My fiancee is from Pennsylvania, and there they also give gifts and not money. They also have cash bars at weddings. My FMIL wanted to have an open bar for cocktail hour than cash bar for the reception. I THINK NOT. I also learned that thier cocktail hour consists of potato chips and pretzels. In NY you can pretty much expect to get money, but there will be a few who will give you the unwanted gifts they got from someone else.
