My FH has tipping questions--the Band/Maitre D/Company Owners

My FH has tipping questions--the Band/Maitre D/Company Owners

So, FH and I were discussing yesterday who gets tips and how much, and we disagreed (peacefully ) on who gets what.

1. I said the band shouldn't get tips--we're paying around $8000 for them and we are feeding them (which I know, is really the proper thing to do.) FH says we should give them $25 each. There's 8 band members...to me that's a lot of money...

2. I said the Maitre D should get $3-5 PP, and doing that at $3 times 225 people is $675. FH thinks this is outrageous and says he doesn't want to tip more than $400. I think this is wayyyy too low.

3. Our Videographer owns his own company, and FH says therefore, he shouldn't get a tip. I halfway agree with this, since both of our parents own companies and they NEVER get tips (granted, they aren't doing video, but still.) But I don't want to seem ungrateful either.

If it counts, we're feeding all vendors.

What do you girls think? TIA!!!!

1. I kinda agree on the band. That's an outrageous amount, so I don't think you should tip either. I also didn't have a band, so I might be out of line lol

2. I agree that $400 seems like enough. All the halls take so much money to begin with, that tipping that much per person when you have 225 people is crazy. But, my hall pissed me off, so I tipped based on that

3. We tipped the videographer and phtoographers -- they both owned their own company, but on that day they did the most amazing job and for a good 14 hours they literally didn't stop once except when they ate. They totally deserved it more than anyone else.

I don't think I'm that helpful lol

Band - I was planning on giving $25 each but they specifically asked us NOT to feed them.

Maitre D - standard is $3-5pp. I'd say, err on the side of $3pp, and if he really sucks, then do the $400 that FH wants to do

Video - How about $50? Just throw the guy a bone - or you could get him a gift certificate or something instead

1. I would tip the band $25 per person only if they blow the night away.

2. I didn't tip the normal $3-5 for the MD, he pissed me off with the liqour that I was suppose to get and didn't. I gave him $400 for 190 guest.

3. I did tip the video and photo $100 each because they totally deserved it. Not so much the photo guy but Myther deserved every penny of it and even more.

1. We didn't feed our band (their request) and I believe we tipped them 30pp. They were 9 pieces but I believe they deserved every penny. They were AMAZING and kept our party fun and people dancing literally all night - people are still talking about how good they were -- that said, maybe you can decide just how much to tip later into the night? If they really go above and beyond, give them a tip but if not, maybe hold on to the envelopes?

2. I think 675 is an appropriate tip for the Maitre D but again, this depends on the level of service. 225 guests is a lot of people to keep track of and keep happy and the tip you give to the Maitre D often gets divided up amongst all the service staff (waiters, bartenders, etc). So if they all do a good job, I think their service should be rewarded.

3. I agree with other posts and think a little tip is appropriate for the videographer too. 50 seems appropriate. It's always nice to give people some incentive to continue to do a good job for you, esp. vendors that need to deliver a final product AFTER the day of your wedding (i.e. photographer, videographer).

Just my opinion of course

1. Wow that's $$ for the band. FH is very big on tipping and feels everybody should get one. We were only going to give ours $25 but ended up giving them $40 each - they rocked it that night!

2. MD - depends on how they do that night. If they don't do sh*t, then give them the bare minimum. We ended up giving ours about $4+ per person b/c they went above and beyond for us. We actually felt like we stiffed him

3. Even though they own their own company, I would still personally tip them. That's just me and FH. Even if it's only a small amount, it shows your appreciation.
