That was actually very well said Anti Bride!

But I think that is more or less what I was trying to say to the teachers...

Its difficult for me to empathize with grading papers at home (which you could do in Pj's in front of the TV, or at a table with your FH) - I'm a CPA - during our busy season, which lasts for 3 months, we work from 8:30AM until 10PM - 2:30AM (YES AM) THEN commute home and take care of our stuff and get up and do it again 6 days a week - And we don't get to do it from home. We don't get snow days, or spring breaks or anything like that - actually most people don't. So to hear ya'll whine about the end of summer - makes me laugh, and actually feel sorry that you are slightly out of touch. That's life - you all don't have it that bad - and I've just found that for some reason you tend to complain the loudest.

In fact - I have co workers who audit your districts - and have it on good authority... you have very little to complain about.

Again don't get me wrong - I am jealous - and if I had it to do over again, I would probably teach.... I just probably wouldn't complain about it.

OKay, so teachers get snow days and spring breaks, however, most jobs get a few weeks of paid vacation to choose at your liking. Teachers, we do not. Try having a job that no one respects and that everyone thinks is a joke. We work in districts that have inadequate supplies for their students and usually spend hundreds of dollars, sometimes even more out of our own pockets for supplies. We teach classes of 25-30 students who all are on different levels. You have students who are a year above grade level, some who are on grade level, and others who are a year below grade level. Yet you have to reach out to all of them and make sure that their needs are being met. Not to mention the parents at home who do not take the time out to get involved in their child's education and if their child does not succeed in any way it is always your fault. Then you have NYS who tells us that ALL children, even if they are special ed. and have an extremely low IQ should pass all the state exams. If they don't well sometimes it is your job that is at stake. Besides all of this we have to constantly go to seminars that we pay for out of our own pockets that are required from those higher up. The salary that everyone thinks is so high is not. I do not consider a starting salary of 38,000 -40,000 a year before taxes to be a high salary. Especially after going to school for 4 years and then being required to get your masters which you have to renew every five years. And by the way, we do not get paid for the summer. The only way a teacher gets a paycheck in the summer is if they take a pay cut during the school year. We put in 8-9 hr days in school and more at home.

I love being a teacher and not because it is an easy job bc it is far from it. I love teaching bc it makes me feel good that I can touch the lives of so many people. I am not asking for praise or complaining about what I do bc I love it! I am just tired of hearing people complain about how easy we have it when they have no clue! You never hear a teacher bash someone else's job, yet you always hear of people bashing teachers.

You got that right Mia. I for one am not a teacher, but FI is and so are most of our friends. I used to 'teacher bash' too, but when you hear what the parents expect of you when they don't try to help their own kids it is really upsetting. I know more than one teacher who gets very frustrated trying to help children whose parents don't seem to understand their role as a parent.

Re: To the Teachers...stop complaining...

I hope noone thinks I was starting something by answering this thread...reminds me of jamespokey's thread the other day on just refraining if you dont agree/ getting bashed/ all the love on the 05 board.

I was simply trying to point out the ways we need to just be supportive of each other cause we are ll in different boats.

I actually have a lot of respect for your job as a CPA now b/c i never knew how busy it gets for you...i was just trying to inform everyone about what its like to be a teacher.

No hard feelings I hope

Whoops - I didn't realize that this was a 'happy zone' board. I guess I should have censored myself a bit more.... so now if I post a picture of myself in a REALLY bad wedding dress - all the '05 Board girls are going to tell me how great I look. Ahhh well, pay back is a b*tch right

So I will drop this right now and apologize to anyone that was offended - teachers notwithstanding! I actually meant it to be more of a play off the other post.

But just as a FRIENDLY side note -

to that one teacher who is paying for her own supplies - that isn't the norm in all districts (it actually gets a bit disgusting to see what gets purchased with our tax dollars)

And to the other teach who posted that clever photo - how did you get a picture of my boss????
