UGH ! What a waste of a gorgeous day! The most gorgeous November day in history and here I wasted it having a HORRIBLE garage sale!
My neighbor across the street joined us, so at least we had company. But there were such few shoppers, and we did REALLY poorly.
I vowed to 'ebay or give away' from now on. If its not worthy of being sold on ebay, it will just be given away. period.
Maybe if we had more traffic we would have done better. I think it was a mixture of it being a gorgeous day (and families went to the parks, beaches, etc) and my house being in a 'Hard to find' type of place. Like Icouldnt put a landmark in the ad really because Im not so close to any landmark that I could have made it easier
I was very organized. I had a $1 Table $2 Table 'Brand new ITems' Table 'Take One - Free With any purchase' Bin and then categories'Books, Handbags, clothes' and a few bigger items.
We just didnt have the traffic.
OK, I'll tell ya how much I made, about $50! the whole day!!!!! yeah, better than nothin I guess Id feel more satisfaction out of giving this stuff to charity... than selling it to some of these 'personalities' out here!
VENT end.

Re: My first and PROBABLY LAST Garage Sale
Ugh...sorry it was a bust, Anna At least you tried!
I prefer to just give stuff to Goodwill or St. Vincent de Paul, and take the tax deduction. I keep saying I''m going to host a yard sale, but I think our house is also in one of those 'hard to find' locations. I''d do MUCH better holding it at my Mom''s house!

Re: My first and PROBABLY LAST Garage Sale
I said the same thing! I should have had it where I grew up in Queens, but none of my family lives there anymore. The clothes would have sold for sure!
I constantly donate bags of clothes to the Veterans thing (Those yellow bags they pass around). and we ALWAYS forget those tax deduction forms when its tax time and I DO hope the clothes/household items really go to someone who needs them!
I think im going to visit that Charity Board that Ron just created...

Re: My first and PROBABLY LAST Garage Sale
Anna, when I lived in Selden I had about three garage sales and made between $200-$300 everytime. I never put it in the paper, but I would put tons and tons of signs up all over. And I wasn''t half as organized as you were. That was so smart with the different tables. Now that I am upstate there isn''t as many people as LI so now I ebay and that isn''t bad either except even if someone does buy the item you still have to pay to list it!

Re: My first and PROBABLY LAST Garage Sale
Location is what makes or breaks a garage sale. My friend has one every year at her MILs and makes like $500 everytime... because she is on a busy sorta main road and they can put up tons of signs...ebay or giveaway is much easier for many people.

Aw! Sorry to hear. You house is definitely nestled way off a main road so you dont get drive by traffic. A fortunate thing most of the time, except when it comes to a yard sale. I wanted to have one and so does my next door neighbor but it wont be till Spring.
Well, you tried!

Scott-got your fm
We put about 10 signs (which we have to take down today!). They are all at the main roads, in big bright letters, and all on nearby local roads that lead to us, each sign says 'next right' or simple quick directions.
Location is DEFINATELY key My neighbor said her hubbys coworker, brought tons of stuff to their job''s parking lot, it''s in a VERY busy area, and she made $700 in one day !!!!! I was also told about a guy on Rt112, who buys bulks from people, of anything. Just bulk prices.. I dont have the patience for that right now
