Book the church first - they usually have limited dates and times that you can get married
good luck

Re: My First Question!
She's right, book the church first. Sometimes if you book the hall first and then go to the church they get upset that you already have a date bc the ceremony is the most important part, not the reception.

Re: My First Question!
If you know what church you have in mind when you find the hall you can call both the same day and confirm they have the date available. That was what I did.

that and halls can charge you for changing the date should your church not have that date available.

Re: My First Question!
well, I booked my reception site first because it was my DREAM place. 'Will you marry me?'... 'Yes... Let's go book the Crescent'. That's pretty much how it went. lol. However, my reception site gave me about a week's grace period before I left my deposit to make sure my church was available for me that day. Luckily, everything worked out for that day.

Re: My First Question!
We did the hall first too and then the church. We didn't let the church know though that we had booked the hall first.
If you aren't set on one specific hall, you are better off going with the church first.

Re: My First Question!
I picked my hall first which was waterfront and I HAD to have it during the day on a Saturday there b/c of the views. Then I got the news that my church doesn't do masses on saturdays before 11 am b/c of funerals. My CH was set to start at 1230 and neither side would budge and work with me on the time. So I had to change the date and then I ultimately had to change the hall I had my heart set on b/c the price per head skyrocketed when I changed the date. It totally ruined me.
So, in sum, my advice to you is find out what times weddings are held at your church before picking a date and a place.

Re: My First Question!
We were penciled in at our hall first, but they said if we needed to change the date it would be ok. We made sure that there wouldn't be a charge, and just to be safe we handed in our contract and deposit after we finalized with the church - we literally drove there right after meeting the Deacon. The night before we met with the church we called the hall to get a list of dates available around the weekend we wanted, and didn't tell the Deacon that we booked the hall first. When he asked when we were thinking we said 'Late September, maybe the 29th?' and luckily they had it. He said 'You don't know how refreshing it is to have someone come to the church first. Usually people book the hall first, but you shouldn't do that.' We just nodded, because I don't want to lie to the church - so technically I didn't

Re: My First Question!
I booked the church first but I looked at halls before booking anything. I knew what date I wanted and I made sure it was available at the halls I liked then I booked the church for that date and then I booked the church.

Re: My First Question!
We booked the CHURCH first! To us, that is the most important thing, and I would have been so disappointed if the date and time I wanted at my home parish was not available to me, just so it can coordinate with the hall time....
I would book the church FIRST... then you can book the hall. i would hate to see you not get married at a specific church that you mgiht have in mind because the date that matches your hall doesnt' fit. you can always find a hall that will work, but most people only have one church they want to get married in.

Re: My First Question!
I booked the church first because it's the same church I've been going to almost all of my life. And I HAD to have that church. And I was lucky that I did because the church was already booked for the original date we wanted.
But I agree if you do book the hall first, just don't tell the church that.

Re: My First Question!
I found with my church (they had a lot of dates) I thought getting the hall was harder. So I held the date at the hall and then cross-checked with the church.
