a friend of mine lost her engagement ring last week and she just told me this morning. she's so upset and i don't know how to comfort her...all i could think of was if i lost mine i would DIE!!
she didn't have insurance on it...and that scares me b/c we don't have insurance for mine. i'm seeing that it really is an important thing...we better get on that!
i'm so sad for her...i don't know WHAT i'd do...i don't think i'd be able to do much of anything actually, b/c FH would KILL me!!
maybe it will turn up...

this might be a stupid question...but where do i go to get my ring appraised? do i use the paperwork given by the jeweler FH bought from, or do i have to go somewhere else?
tia!
Go to a jewelry appraiser. Ideally an independent appraiser, meaning that it is not affiliated with a jewelry store who might be biased. I think Jewelry Judge in Mineola is highly recommended.
I was so anxious about my ring until we got it insured. It was hard for us to find an appraiser out here so we ended up going to Bailey Banks & Biddle since they have a so-called 'independent' appraiser come in once a month. She seemed like an idiot and gave us a very undetailed appraisal, but it did have an estimate (~ $2k more than FH spent) so we were able to go get it insured. Appraisals are usually a bit more than you paid, but you don't want it to be too much more since your premium is based on that amount. I still don't want to lose my ring, but at least now I know we are covered. When I'm back in NY I might go get a real thorough apprasial but this did the job for insurance purposes.
I got a separate policy from State Farm.

Everyone should get their rings insured! It's insured even if you lose it, I always thought it was only if it was stolen.
My ring isn't very pricey (ha ha) so it's only like $50 a year added onto our rental insurance with Geico. But we live in NJ, not sure if that matters.

I think being in NJ helps. I'm living out of state right now too (for law school) and it was cheaper to get it insured here than in NY.

How terrible for your friend
I insured my ring with Jeweler's Mutual, they cover it 100% whereas Met Life, the co. I have renter's insurance with, would only cover my deductible. Definitely check it out! mine is like $150 a year, I think - super cheap and worth it for peace of mind!
wow i didn't know you could get it separate from homeowners or renters insurance...thanks so much for the info!!
No problem! I looked into renters and that's when I found out it just enough coverage. They are very easy to work with and super cheap! Do it this week, please!!!

Jeanette, if you got to the jeweler that FH bought the ring from, they may appraise it for free (considering you paid him for the ring, they should!). The paperwork you have might even do - I would call the co. you are going to go with and maybe even the jeweler to see if what you have will suffice.

Re: my friend lost her E-ring!!
We got our second appraisal done at Macy's Herald Square...its in the same building as Macy's but separated from the department store. If you call they make appointments.

OMG! That is my worst fear. Sometimes when I forget that I put it away, Ill feel my my finger for it and have a quick panic attack until I remember that I put it away. I cant count how many times that happens. I really hope it turns up. What did her FH have to say about it?? FH would probably call off the wedding! He's always asking, 'Did you lose your ring yet'?
