She went to an Amsale trunk show this weekend & perhaps got a little bullied into leaving a deposit with the salon even though she didn't pick an exact dress. She hasn't signed any paperwork, just left them $500, which they are saying is non-refundable. They told her if she left the deposit, they'd give her the 10% trunk show reduction off an Amsale if she ordered one.
She narrowed it down to 2 gowns, an Amsale & a Watters. So, she loves the Amsale gown called Sydney. She would like it, however, without the spaghetti straps. The salon is now telling her it wil be an additional $250 to have the dress modified. Plus alterations. My friend is on a budget & now the cost of the dress is up to $3400 + alterations which they are saying will be anywhere from $150-$350 (a.k.a $350+) Basically, her 10% discount just went out the window b/c they are charging her to take the straps off.
Did anyone here have factory modifcations done on their Amsale gown & if so, did Amsale charge you for it? I changed the beading on my gown & it didn't cost me anything. I don't want to upset her & lead her to think she's being taken advantage of... but I think she's being railroaded
Thoughts???

I don't know anything about the designer but due to the fact that she has not signed any paper work I don't see how they can retain her deposit. I would put a stop payment on the check or cc if she still can. If her discount is out the window anyway she might as well go somewhere else that will work with her about alterations.

She can get in touch with the state attorney generals office and the better business bureau.

Cant she purchase the dress as it is and bring it somewhere else to have it altered. I was told that most dresses come with the straps and if you dont want them it costs nothing to remove them. Your friend seems to be getting taken. Sorry!

Actually, if she didn't sign anything, I don't see how she would be legally bound to purchase anything.
As for the dress being changed to a strapless version, it makes sense to charge her for the design change IF the current design uses the spaghetti straps to hold it up. Some dresses you can't just snip off the straps - they need to be reinforced in the bodice and modified to a strapless style.
Good luck to her. If she decides to buy there, I would recommend going elsewhere for cheaper alterations.
