My June 30 Wedding at the Carlyle!!!

Original post by Valenia

Wow, I can not believe that it is my turn to post about my wedding! To be honest, I still can't believe its already happened, it feels like a dream somewhere in my memory! (And yes, it was everything I dreamed of!)

I've seen these posts written in a number of ways, ranging from a heartfelt replay of the day to an objective vendor review. I think I'm going to go the more objective route on this one, since I think that will be more helpful to all of you. I just wanted to preface by saying that -- so that the fact I am being critical does not make you believe that I wasn't truly ecstatic about my day! I just want to share some info that may be helpful, and that means sharing the minor nuisances...

I'll go in order of the day to start...

Calligraphy for Invites and Place Cards -- Inkspun (http://www.inkspun.com) did a great job fast for very little money. I would definately recommend them if you don't have your heart set on hand-done calligraphy.

Rehearsal Dinner -- Ecco on Jericho Turnpike in Garden City. Fantastic! They were on the pricey side, but well worth it. This is a fancy northern italian restaurant with a private room. I believe the minimum was 40 people (we had about 45 I believe) and the maximum is about 60. (I wouldn't go much over 50 though for the space). Excellent food, great atmosphere, and impeccable service.

Make Up -- Laurie Ann made me feel absolutely amazing. I don't normally wear a lot of makeup, so I was nervous. The makeup looked very natural, stayed on well, and looks fabulous in the pictures I've seen so far.

Hair -- Melissa is an absolute artist. I think I was on the more conservative side of her usual clients, the photos in her portfolio included amazing braids and really original styles if you are a bit more trendy then me! I wanted something timeless and a bit more traditional. I brought a few pictures to my trial, and then we played a bit on our own. I loved how it came out!!

Dress -- Priscilla of Boston. I am so sad I can't wear this dress again. Maybe we should have a LIWeddings party where all the newlyweds get to wear their dresses! I loved my dress, and Priscilla's treated me well -- will one major OOPs -- they left the pins in and didn't sew one layer of the underskirt. I didn't notice this until the morning of.

Photographer -- Creative Compositions. We used Steve as the primary formal photographer and Ruth for black and white candids. I haven't seen my proofs yet, so I'll be able to say more later! I can tell you that they were very professional, and efficient about putting together all of the groups of people. They had us laughing the entire time we took pictures, it was great fun!

Limo -- Ultimate Class. Timely, polite, and the car was in great shape. I would definately recommend them.

Flowers -- In Full Bloom. Marie did an excellent job. I will post pictures taken by my guests below. The chuppah, bouquets, and centerpieces were beautiful and I received many compliments.

Location -- Carlyle on the Green. I know the other Carlyle brides will have many questions, so I should really start another post on this. The summary, everything was amazing. Barbara who was my bridal assistant was an absolute angel, I don't know how I would have made it through the day without her. We have received compliments galore about the Carlyle. My only gripe -- the maitre d kept calling my by my maid of honor's name during the rehearsal. Oops.

Videographer -- Skylight Productions. This is another one that I'll have to wait to give a full review.

Band -- Central Park from Steven Scott Orchestras. They were very, very good when singing. I have just two complaints to make, they stopped playing for a short bit while people were eating when there was supposed to be no stops. Second, they called my brother instead of my husband for the parent dance. (Thats a big oops!)

Honeymoon -- Hawaii. Absolutely amazing. This could also be its own thread without question! We stayed at the Halekulani on Oahu, the Hyatt on Kauai, and the Four Seasons on Maui.

Well thats a good start... Pictures will follow...

Re: My June 30 Wedding at the Carlyle!!!

First I would like to say congratulations to you and your new husband. All of the pictures look beautiful!
You look stunning, flowers were amazing, and in all the pictures you both looked so happy. I have been so exicted to hear how it all went. I was thinking of you when I was packing to moving to LI on the 30th.
Is there anything I should know about the Carlyle? Or anything I should be prepared for?
How did the grounds look?
What did you end up doing about the gratuity? If you want I can call you, or e-mail you at work on this matter.
Food/ service- was is what we expected?
I am so excited for the two of you and the new puppy!
YEAH you did it

Re: My June 30 Wedding at the Carlyle!!!

Valenia, your hair is absolutely stunning! Are those hair pins? Where did you get them?

Re: My June 30 Wedding at the Carlyle!!!

metphan - Yes, I was wearing hairpins that I absolutely adored! My mother-in-love (not just law!) bought them for me at my final fitting from Priscilla of Boston. The pins were made by an Australian company, and are available from other stores. They had to designs where I bought from, mine were small round petals with crystals and a single medium sized pearl in the middle. They had another which looked a bit more modern without a pearl. I can't remember the company name at the moment, but if I can find the box its written on there...

Heather - I knew I'd be hearing from you soon. And I am super happy to answer all your questions. The first thing I'll say is: DON'T WORRY ABOUT A THING! They will take very good care of you and your guests! I felt complete confidence in their hands throughout the entire day. So, what you should know is that you chose very wisely and that when your day comes you should just relax and enjoy it -- don't worry about the details they have it all under control!

The grounds looked amazing -- WOW, WOW, WOW. It was rather funny to notice that my guests weren't sitting and talking at the tables much -- they were either dancing or gathered by the windows chatting and admiring the view.

My father took care of the gratuity, so other then the bridal attendant (Barbara, who I need to write a love letter to!) I am not sure who was tipped what. (I had to make sure Barbara was well taken care of because she made my day so great!) I can ask my dad if you are curious.

Food/Service - Great/Great! Its the Carlyle, of course it was wonderful... Oh and a special note, the molten chocolate cake was mmmmmm mmmm good (Lots of compliments on that), and the wedding cake was scrumptious! A picture of the cake is below...

Ask all the questions you'd like, I'm very happy to talk about the day, reliving it is so much fun!

Hair and Makeup People

The people who did my hair and makeup are not affiliated with a salon. They both work freelance, and will come to your home with all the equipment they need on the day of your wedding. I would highly recommend both of them, I was very pleased with their work. (Plus they are super nice, which is very important when you are all nervous the day of!!!)

Hair -- Melissa (631) 951-9080
Makeup -- Laurie (516) 314-1303

Thanks again for all of your kind words!!!

Re: My June 30 Wedding at the Carlyle!!!

octobergirl - Great to hear from you!!! There is never enough time it seems! I got up at 5 am, and the hair and makeup people began to work on me at 5:30 am. The photographer arrived at 7:30, but I wasn't dressed and ready til closer to 7:50. We took pictures right up to the ketubah signing and rehearsal (about 10:50 am), and then we ended up doing a few more of the two of us after the ceremony. I probably should have started hair at 5 am instead! LOL

Re: My June 30 Wedding at the Carlyle!!!

Valenia...how much did Melissa charge to do your hair? Did she do anyone else's hair? I'm looking for someone to come to my house and do my hair and my BM's (4 of them) hair also and maybe my mom's. Does she also do makeup and you chose to use someone else or does she not do makeup at all? thanks!

i have never seen more stunning hair!!!

Re: My June 30 Wedding at the Carlyle!!!

Her pricing ranges depending on how complicated the style you want is. Mine was $100 for the style, plus $40 to cover her time traveling to my home. (Worth every penny!) She charged $65 to do a simple style for one of my bridesmaids. If you need that six people done, she would bring an associate of hers to work at the same time. I think she can do makeup, but hair is definately her speciality... plus with that many people to be done, you will probably need 2 hair and 2 makeup people there!
