My mom didn't get her visa

Original post by mskittynj

My mom and sister went on their interview today to see if they could get a visa to come to the wedding. They denied her. I am really bummed!!! It's beyond me how we let terrorists into this country but not a mother and sister who want to come and see a wedding! Just absolutely ridiculous! I'm so upset.

I am so sorry to hear that.

I made sure that my aunts and grandmother brought with them my Wedding Invitation to the counselor to prove to them that they are going to a wedding.

my relatives did the same thing....even included a letter from myself and my dad....it just wasn't enough for them. sometimes its just blind luck!

That totally *****. Is there an appeal process?

No appeal. It is what it is...They can apply again in 1 year from now. But from what the guy told her, Her citizenship papers should come in about 9 months...So all I have to do is wait. She won't be here for my wedding though which I really wanted...

I'm confused. If she was coming here to visit as a tourist would she have to get a Visa also? Or would her passport be enough?

Can she try it that way?

I am soooooooo sorry that this is happening.

I'm so sorry. I'm Australian and know all about the ups and downs of visas! I couldn't imagine my family not being able to come to my wedding.

For a lot of countries especially now after 9/11 you need a visa to come into the US for a visit. It's I think just a stamp that you have approval to come.

I'm so sorry that your mom and sister can't come. I can only imagine how sad that that makes you feel.

if they are staying less than 30 days then i believe you don't need a visa just a passport.

It depends on what country you are going to/coming from. Brazil requires all US citizens to get a visa when visiting Brazil regardless of how long you'll be staying so I think the reciprocal is also true of Brazilian citizens coming here.

That's true. It depends on teh country and length of stay. And it has gotten extremely harder after Sept 11.

I do immmigration work...and for many many countries, especially those that are considered 'third world' you can not simply just get on a plane and come to the U.S. It doesn't matter if you want to just visit for 3 days...you MUST have a visa. You have to go to the U.S. consulate in your country and apply in person and prove that you will maintain your non-immigrant status while staying in the U.S., and that you will return to your own country.

In order for you to travel to the U.S. without a visa your country must participate in the 'Visa Waiver Program'. You can be in the U.S. for up to 90 days without a visa. There are only 27 countries on this list...::
Andorra
Iceland
Norway
Australia
Ireland
Portugal
Austria
Italy
San Marino
Belgium
Japan
Singapore
Brunei
Liechtenstein
Slovenia
Denmark
Luxembourg
Spain
Finland
Monaco
Sweden
France
the Netherlands
Switzerland
Germany
New Zealand
United Kingdom

any other countries, you are supposed to obtain a visa.

you can find the info on travel.state.gov

ETA: Just wanted to say that sometimes we forget how GREAT it is to be a citizen of the U.S. and travel just about anywhere! An american passport is something that millions of people around the world WISH they could get their hands on!
