so, they are starting to come back in, and my Mom says that there is not a SINGLE soul that she knows who is coming. Not a single one. I guess that is what happenns when the other side (Future in laws) invite more people then myself, my fiance and her COMBINED.
What could I say to her?
Perhaps even worse, *I* don't know any of these people either. Am I going to be in a room full of strangers on my wedding day?

Nope. it is all my mom.
They agreed to pay for part of the cost for each of their guests over 60. And 'their' guests do not, according to them, include their son's (FH).
What they are paying helps but it barely covers the flat plate charge for the reception - it doesn't touch the 50 extra invitations, the 5 extra tables and their attendant centerpieces, the extra favors, place cards, toss petals, programs, not to mention tax and tip!
Tradition is admirable, but I do kind of feel bad for my Mom, you know?

umm, maybe have a BBQ or soemething with both sides, so seh get sto knwo some of your FILs family?
Some people on your side will rsvp. They wil be outnumbered, but if that's how the guest list was, there is not much you can do about it now.

That is the same thing with me. I have a very small family but FH has a very big Italian family.

i have a rule about that, I refuse to meet someone for the first time on my wedding day. there will be no cousins of cousins of cousins that we just 'have' to invite to the wedding. i have already told fi this & he agrees. are all these do-not-knows relatives of his, or is his mom just inviting half the known world??
