option 1 :separate bank accounts? option 2: joint account? option 3: joint account with a stash on the side?
So many choices and every choice you make affect ur future...esp since money is not an easy issue in marriages
i think option 3 works for me!

Re: My Money is Your Money
I was talkiong to a bank mannager at my bank asking him about that and he suggested to keep your own bank accounts and get one joint account. He said if you share the account say you only have 100 left and you both go shopping and both spend 100 then you get hit with a overdraft charge plus the extra 100 spent. He said put all ur $ in a joint account pay bills w that then give yourselves an budget in your own account so you know exactly whats left.

Re: My Money is Your Money
we have a joint account where the wedding gifts went. Then we both have our own accounts. We split all the bills. It's been working for us since we moved in together 3 years ago.

I'll go with option 4. My money, Your money, Our money. We took all of our expences cut it in half that goes into our money. Everything else is mine or his. We put an equal amount into a forth bank account that is an emergency fund that is never touched. This has worked for us for over 10 years.

Re: My Money is Your Money
We feel most comfortable with option 3, having our seperate accounts and one joint account.

Re: My Money is Your Money
We have a mix of 1 & 2. We have lived together for 5 years, and have owned a house for 3.
I like that we have a joint account for all of the bills. I also like knowing that I have my own money to go out and buy really expensive shoes lol.
Eventually this will have to change, once we have children, but it works for right now!

Re: My Money is Your Money
we each have our own checking/savings accounts and right now we have one joint acct.....all our e-party money went in there and also each pay period, a portion of our paychecks go in it which helps pay for the wedding expenses!! I think we will prob keep the separate accounts for now and when we get married, we may just combine everything...

Re: My Money is Your Money
Option 3. When we moved in together, we opened up a joint account where our rent/bills $$ goes, but I have my own separate checking and banking account.
I feel it's the best way.

Re: My Money is Your Money
Option 3, My FH and I have a joint checking, mm and cd. We also have our own checking, savings and cds. And I think we’re going to try and keep it like this after we get married it stops arguments over what each of us are spending our money on. As long as we put in our share for bills and savings everything is good.

#2. We've been together for 9 years, lived together for 6. When we bought a house together (4yrs ago) we combined everything. IMO, there is no point for separate accounts. But I guess, it doesn't work for everyone. For us it does. Complete disclosure.

Re: My Money is Your Money
Good question and it was helpful to read what everyone said.
We just opened a JT checking account! We always had separate accounts although we would help each other out with the bills since we lived together for a long time. We decided to have a JT check and savings and each keep separate accounts for allowances.

We both have our own seperate checking accounts & to save money for the wedding, after our engagement party, we are opening a joint savings account which we will both put money into when we get paid.
this is exactly what we did I also have a separate savings account
