My nightly rant - Smoking

Original post by Goldi1021

I just spent about a half hour with a smoker downstairs and in that time I managed to get nauseous. I don't get the appeal.

If it helps then great. Just know it was not my intention to start something or make anyone feel bad. The last time I opened my mouth, we got a t-shirt contest!

Not at all!

Sometimes it's not being self righteous. Some people really do get sick from the smoke, or the smell. I hate that I can't walk around outside without risking an asthma attack because people think they can smoke where they want. I mean it goes both ways, some people want to smoke where they see fit, others want to be able to breathe where they see fit. And it's not just newborns or the elderly who it can effect. So someone might not be being self righteous, they may have a respiratory disorder.

I think you girls have encouraged me to once again try to quit smoking. I have been smoking for over 10 years, and really want to stop. I had one cigarette today, let's see if I can go the rest of the day without one.

Wish me luck, update tomorrow

Stephanie- We could be each others support! I have not had one since Friday! It's very hard at work....becuase I want to so bad because it gets me away from my stressful desk! But I am determined this this time....let me know if you need someone to lean on! i know I do! Good Luck!

Hey Goldi Look what you started

Thanks, I actually made an appointment to see the doctor next tuesday to get a script for Wellbutrin (anti-depressent that helps with the physical cravings). you have to take the pills 2 weeks before tour quit date so I guess I will be smoking til then (but I am definitely gonna cut down). Thanks for the support

ouch, well that didn't go over like I wanted it to. I just think that if I am outside in a smoking section , with ashtrays and stuff, GET OVER IT. walk the other way if you don't want to be near my smoke. That is why they designate certain areas as smoking sections and others as non smoking sections. It's people's attitudes that get me the most, that 'hollier than thou' idea makes me sick. Sorry need to vent. And who knows, once I quit I may feel the same way you feel, but I would never make someone feel bad for smoking.

That was the greatest thing Bloomberg ever did. It wasn't fair to people that didn't smoke. I hated coming home from places STINKING of smoke it's disgusting

Quitting smoking after 20-something years was the hardest thing I ever did. I loved the act of it, the smell of it, the taste of it. I don't crave it anymore though! Almost 4 months now.....

That is really awesome. I remember you posting that you quit a few months ago.

As for the rant, the smoking ban is the greatest. I used to hate going to bars and coming home with smelly clothes. I actually never noticed until I went to a bar in the South and had to febreeze everything when I came home.

I am a smoker (trying to quit) and it is very rude IMO when you are outside somewhere smoking and these 'self-righteous non-smokers' make this HUGE deal (cover their mouths, give you dirty looks). I mean give me a freakin break, I am outside and have every right to smoke where I see fit. Obviously, if there was a baby or an older person around I would not be blowing smoke in thier face. I think the people who make the biggest stink are disgruntled ex-smokers. Sorry I had to vent as well. Thanks for listening.

I respect your opinion, but I have to say that most smokers do not follow the rule about being a certain distance from entrances of buildings. It may be one person's choice to smoke, but it is also some people's right not to smoke. In order to get into work I have had to go past people smoking right on top of the entrance...there is no way to avoid it. I have chosen, for my health, not to smoke...and it is all for nothing when I inhale another person's non-filtered 2nd hand smoke. I always say 'live and let live', but who is more self-righteous: someone who covers there mouth to avoid inhaling a dangerous toxin or someone who will smoke right on top of non-smokers knowing this affects other people's health beside's their own? Not just babies and older people are effected...some people have asthema, some people have allergies, some people just don't want cancer. I too respect that everyone has their habits, their crutches...but when something effects not just your health, but other people's I find a smoker's arguement very hard to understand. I find it sad that so many people are concerned about the quality of air we have due to environmental factors, yet we still contribute more cancer-causing toxins to our air by smoking. What people do in their own home is one thing, but when you are effecting other people's health it's another. No disrespect...I just have my opinion.

I resepct your opinion. I do NOT smoke near entrances to buildings and still get dirty looks, like all of a sudden smoking is a contagious disease. I understand your point, I guess it's just people's attitudes that get to me. I too think it is a nasty habit, and I am intending on quitting soon. Maybe I can become a self-righteous non-smoker soon too

Seriously, good luck to you. I know it's a hard habit to break, but if you try you can do it!
