my parents have just thrown a wrench in my plans...
let me preface this by saying i am not complaining but i dont know what to do. and its long. sorry
we went to a showcase last night and my parents fell in love with the band arcadia. we had originally planned on getting a DJ because FH is dominicano and we want a good mix of spanish music as well. Arcadia said they could try to learn some of the songs but otherwise we could give them a CD of the songs we want and they would stream it thru their system.
FH and I want like 30% spanish music, 70% american music. I dont see the point in getting a band if they're going to be playing the CD 30% of the time. but my parents dont think we should even play that much spanish music because they dont think the americans will dance. we were planning on choosing a lot of more 'mainstream' spanish music that everyone will dance to.
should i get this awesome band and have very little spanish music or should i stick with the DJ?
BTW FH and I love to dance, especially to spanish music, and my dad's a musician so music's important to both sides of the family. what to do?!?!?!?!

I think you should stick with a DJ. How will his side of the family feel when the American music is played by a band but their music is played through a sound system? Also I'd be pretty annoyed to pay a band to play only 70% of the time. Finally, its your wedding and you seem to want the DJ more so I'd go for it.
JMO, hope it helps.

being that i am not a fan of bands anyway...my opinion might be biased.
but with that being said...i agree with you with the fact that bands are expensive and why pay so much if you are only getting 70% worth of your money. I get that your parents are saying to play more american music BUT your FH and his family would enjoy the spanish music and they should be able to have it as well. There are many mainstream spanish songs that americans will dance to as well. i like dancing to spanish music and i would stay on the dancefloor if it came on (as long as i didnt look too stupid doing white people moves lol)
in my opinion i think you will get more of what you want and it would be money better spent by having a DJ

hmmm
welll first and foremost I would do what you and FH want, it is your wedding.
However when parents are helping it does give them some input. Trust me I KNOW!
That being said if you went with the Band and they said they will learn some songs and play the CD, so it could still be a nice mix. Could you have a more Spanish themed Rehersal Dinner, this way you arn't totally exculding FH's side?
Most likley a CD is going to be played at some point in the night in spanish, english or any other language/ style considering bands take breaks. So I wouldn't rule it out all together if it is something you think you would like.
ETA: I have a DJ and PERSONALLY prefer them. So I am not pushing the band bc of any personal preferances. Just wanted to clear that up!

I don't think you should compromise on the style of music played; if you and FH want Spanish music, have it! FH is Bengali and I'm American...we want some Indian music (poppy stuff, like the stuff in Bollywood movies) played as a representation of his culture. (Ironically, he's a huge fan of the Cure and Nine Inch Nails and like...never listens to Bengali or Indian music, but that's another story...)
Bands are usually significantly more $ than a DJ and it sounds like you guys really have your heart set on a DJ. A DJ would probably be able to make the music flow from one style to another easier than a band.
From the weddings I've been to, as long as the bride and groom are up there dancing, LOTS of your guests will be up there dancing, regardless of the style of music played.
I completely understand music being so important to you - FH plays guitar, I play bass occasionally, and his dad plays guitar.
Good luck!

I know that when parents are providing some financial assistance they do get a little more say BUT this isYOUR and YOUR FH's wedding ya know? Get what you guys want and explain to your parents that this is a day that you want to infuse two different cultures. I am puerto rican and spanish and my fh is scottish/irish/german/english and I know that we are going to play some salsa and some american music. If he were to come up to me with his mother and say that there is this amazing band that is expensive that plays mostly american music but will try to learn some spanish and stream a cd (which is kind of a waste of money when you are hiring a band you want to hear mostly them and not 30% cd) I would probably not go for it. I want some music that reflects my culture and a band if nice but if you guys already had your plans on a dj because that is easier to break the music situation down then i would do what you originally planned. goodluck!

Have you checked out any other bands? I know Code Bleu can also play spanish music, and I believe a good variety of it. Code Bleu also does not take breaks, so there would be band music playing all night, no CD's.
But if you're more comfortable with a dj, then go for it.

Stick with the DJ....I wouldn't chance it with the band, nor would I let my parents make me feel bad for wanting FH to have music he likes too

NP - it depends on the band. Some do take breaks and use cds. But one of my requirements for booking a band was NO breaks. Why bother paying for them if they're going to play cds?

i def think you should stick with a DJ...you have to think about how your FIL would feel about not having spanish much being played by a band that can only play your american music...they would probly feel insulted...i would def go with the DJ 100%

i think if you and fh wanted a dj then thats what you should go with...its your day and you should be able to have what you want and incorporate the spanish music.

Re: my parents have just thrown a wrench in my plans...
I would look into other bands that can play both american and spanish music - the band that I am using never plays a CD.

thanks for all your answers guys
i am definitely going to look into code bleu but FH is pretty much putting his foot down on this point. the problem is that my parents are paying for the majority of the wedding.

Do what you want- get the DJ. Personally, I'm much more of a fan of DJ's..you get everything you want.. especially if you have specific requests like you do. Just be honest and say you really want a DJ over a band.
