.....or alternatively titled.: 'Our horrible trip to the movies yesterday'.
We went to see..........
'The Hitchiker's Guide to The Galaxy'
First off, I am probably the biggest fan of the Douglas Adams books and have been anticipating the release of this movie for years. So many rumours about it being made, then finally confirmation last year...I was overjoyed!!!! I don't post on this board much, but some of you may remember me posting earlier this year about how much I was looking forward to this movie.
We saw it yesterday.
It sucked.
Literally one of the worst movies I've EVER seen. They literally sucked the life out of the books. Douglas Adams may have lent a hand in the script, but I think he would be rolling in his graves had he seen the finished product.
I can only think that they had script editors that had their sense of humor surgically removed go through the books and selectively pluck out all of the funny or clever lines to make a two hour torture test for moviegoers.
My advice? Don't waste your money. I even spent extra for the fancy 'Director's Hall' theater with extra wide leather seats, upgraded sound and assigned seating to ensure you get the seat you want (even though there was only ONE other guy in the theater and he left halfway through).
I almost got into an argument with Felicia because she did not want to see it in the first place. I dragged her to the theater because I just KNEW she would love the movie (of course!). Let's say it was a quiet ride home.
I am so dissapointed. I was looking forward to this movie more then 'Star Wars' or 'War of the Worlds'.
Just to let you know how gawd-awful this film was, here's a review from one of the biggest Douglas Adams fans. (He wrote a best-selling biography of Douglas Adams)
Sorry Felicia. I owe you three picks at Blockbuster now.

Anthony, since you're into Kevin and SW, go to www.viewaskew.com, that's where he posted his review.
They might have it on newsaskew too, haven't checked.

Awesome! Thanks! I had a feeling Lucas would not let us down with the final chapter. Speilberg had a hand in some of the scenes in Episode III as well (he had to knock a little sense into George)

Re: My public apology to Felicia
I was hoping he wouldn't let us down too. Although, the other two didn't bother me as much as they did the rest of the general Geek Population. I loved the Yoda lightsaber fight from the last one - I imagined him saying 'On Bring It!'
Nevertheless, I just felt that Lucas owed it to his fans to end on a good note, especially since this movie is poised to be such a downer.
I'll leave on this note: 'Empire had the better ending. Luke gets his hand cut off, finds out Vader's his father, Han gets frozen in carbonite and taken off by Boba Fett, it ends on such a down note! That's what life is, a series of down endings. All Jedi had was a bunch of Muppets.'

I just read the Kevin Smith review. I think Felicia might even like this one. (and I'm with you, Phantom and AOTC didn't bother me at all...in fact I thought AOTC was awesome!)

Don't know what you guys are talking about - I love the books and I loved the movie!
Douglas Adams' family even loved it! There is no specific DEFINITIVE version of the HHGTTG because the Radio version is different than the Books which are different than the BBC TV show. Adams changed it himself 8000 times. In fact, if you read the introduction to the Ultimate book (all 5 books in one volume), he himself says that the first book is like episodes 1,3,5, and 7 (or something like that) of the BBC scripts.
Sorry you guys didn't like it though. DH and I are going back to see it again, because we forgot to bring our towels the first time!
I'm glad you liked it. At least someone found some enjoyment from it.
Ask Felicia (who did not read the book) why they carried towels around the entire movie. She won't know! Why? They never even went into why they were carrying towels. It seems they tried to make a movie they thought would appeal to the fans of the book (who, based on most movie boards I read...hate it) and tried to adapt it for everyone, but left them puzzled instead.
So many plot build-ups only never to be resolved....
What the heck did Humma Kavula have to do with anything in the flick? Just a showcase for Malkovich? They waste a good 20 minutes on his little subplot and never resolve it or mention him again! I liked having him as an additional character, but jeez...
Why did Deep Thought have the 'Point of View' gun? How did Humma Kavula know it was there? If he knew it was there, why didn't just go himself and get it? Also, how did he have the little cube that 'just so happened' to have the coordinates for Magarethia that just happened to be built for the Heart of Gold's secretive 'Improbability Drive'? How Improbable!
Why did they butcher all of Douglas Adams great quotes? I can understand changing them a bit to make them funnier or for a fresh look....but they actually made them un-funny!
...and why the heck was Marvin (quite possibly the character that everyone was looking forward to the most) so lame? His droll whining (that worked so brilliantly in other versions of HHGTTG) was just dumb in the movie?
I could go on and pick apart every scene, but I won't. I don't want to re-live that nightmare of a movie.
I guess it's all in how you look at it. Most fans of the previous version (BBC, books and plays) have had nothing good to say about the movie. It just does not seem very 'Adams'....more 'Jim Carrey'.
THANK YOU! I have to say I agre 100%. I even told Fh 'no one's going to get the towel thing', as if that were the only thing wrong witht eh movie. Fh told me, we;ll maybe it incorparated more from the radio show... I still don't think it made sense. It just seemed like one plot contrivance after another... I know the books don't have a 'plot' per se, but the movie lost out on the humor, the character development, etc, etc. I think character development is the big one for me...
That havig bene said I didn't hate the movie...and I wasn't that disappointed until i got to the end and I was like 'that's it?'.. I thought the casting was very good. Arthur was SO Arthur, and Trillian was great..but I didn't think they developed the charatcer well, and W T F is up with making it some kind of heavily contrived love story? Just wondering!

I can't even tell you how many people are still complaining that the whole 'Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs' business wasn't explained in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (which, btw, JK Rowling even has no problem with).
THIS WILL BOTHER ME FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE!
I dunno, if I'm even mildly entertained I consider it a success - I'm not overly picky. I thought that Sam Rockwell was a Dead On Zaphod. The segments with excerpts from the Guide itself were a highlight for me - I wasn't sure how they were going to translate that to the screen, and really liked how they did it.
I AGREE, I THOUGHT THEY WERE CUTE
And on a related note -- I'm not sure if you would care or not, but Kevin Smith has given GLOWING recommendation to 'Revenge of the Sith'. He says that this movie is the movie we were all waiting for, and that it makes up for the other two. And if you know anything about Kevin Smith, you know he's all about the Star Wars.
ONE WAS EH, TWO SUCKED, I AM POISED TO LOVE THREE. THEY SAID IF YOU LOVE THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY< YOU WILL LOVE SITH

wow - that is shocking
I've seen them all, (the original three and these last two stinkers) but I cannot say I've ever liked ANY of them .. bleeech its like pulling teeth to get me to watch a Star Wars movie
I'm the furthest thing from a sci-fi fan, dislike the genre on a whole - but grwoing up with a brother who was SO into science fiction, and now a hubby who is the same, I'm kind stuck
Then again, you couldn't get me to watch current wrestling either

I have NO idea what you are referring to when you fans say 'the towel thing' (and I really watched and didn't fall asleep, I swear!) I noticed them with the towels, sure, but had no idea it factored in in a bigger way
I will agree only with that I thought Arthur was great - everyone else, BIG HUGE BLEEEEEEEEECH
Oh and the only time I laughed was with the mice at the end ... I know, I'm a sucker for stupid stuff

Re: My public apology to Felicia
Just wanted to say Marymoon put her comments within the text of quoting me.
I LOVED Prisoner of Azkaban, and anything that JK Rowling can shrug off without issue won't bother me either (Moony Wormtail Padfoot Prongs).
Oh, and if it scares you guys that Don hasn't seen a Star Wars flick, it will probably disturb you even more that I've never seen an Indiana Jones movie.
We got the boxed set for Chanukah from BIL though, so I really have no more excuse on that one.
