My public apology to Felicia

Original post by DMAG

.....or alternatively titled.: 'Our horrible trip to the movies yesterday'.

We went to see..........

'The Hitchiker's Guide to The Galaxy'

First off, I am probably the biggest fan of the Douglas Adams books and have been anticipating the release of this movie for years. So many rumours about it being made, then finally confirmation last year...I was overjoyed!!!! I don't post on this board much, but some of you may remember me posting earlier this year about how much I was looking forward to this movie.

We saw it yesterday.

It sucked.

Literally one of the worst movies I've EVER seen. They literally sucked the life out of the books. Douglas Adams may have lent a hand in the script, but I think he would be rolling in his graves had he seen the finished product.

I can only think that they had script editors that had their sense of humor surgically removed go through the books and selectively pluck out all of the funny or clever lines to make a two hour torture test for moviegoers.

My advice? Don't waste your money. I even spent extra for the fancy 'Director's Hall' theater with extra wide leather seats, upgraded sound and assigned seating to ensure you get the seat you want (even though there was only ONE other guy in the theater and he left halfway through).

I almost got into an argument with Felicia because she did not want to see it in the first place. I dragged her to the theater because I just KNEW she would love the movie (of course!). Let's say it was a quiet ride home.

I am so dissapointed. I was looking forward to this movie more then 'Star Wars' or 'War of the Worlds'.

Just to let you know how gawd-awful this film was, here's a review from one of the biggest Douglas Adams fans. (He wrote a best-selling biography of Douglas Adams)

Hitchiker's Review

Sorry Felicia. I owe you three picks at Blockbuster now.

Heck I even had to buy my own popcorn and soda!!!

You are soooooooo dead! I begged her to let me buy her something as we are going into the theater.

'No I'm not hungry'

'Are you sure, you didn't eat anything'

'No, I'm not hungry'

'Are you absolutely sure? I'm getting a soda.'

'No, I'm not hungry'

Ten minutes later she gets up to go to the bathroom and comes back with a popcorn, soda and bag of candy. Go figure.

OK OK - you are not the bad guy I'm making ya out to be

Sitting through the SHEER TORTURE that was this movie was painful enough, you still know you OWE ME after BEGGING ME to go see this piece o'crap that they called a film

come on now! It wasnt bad...it was amusing and funny and I cant stop shouting 'HUMMA KAVULA!!!''

But Ive never read the books and i understand how readers get hopes up when the movie comes along but it never turns out good

still,

the movie makes me wanna go get the 5 book series to find out what happens

Just my two Cents ...sorry you guys didnt like it

What did I miss then?

I didn't read the books either... nor do I really want to. Anthony (DMAG) would read me passages and I'd go 'Huh' and knew that it wasn't my type of humor. Yet I still hated the film

DH LOVES the books, is a HUGE Fan - yes he had great expectations and was so eagerly awaiting this flick, yet and he truly, utterly hated it.. he was actually furious when we left (I was kind of expecting to hate it, so I had no expectations to begin with )

Maybe we were still burnt out from vacation, but I think not

The ONE GUY in the movie theater with us GOT UP less than 1 hour into it and walked out

Hmmm I have to think about that one

{insert evil, sinister laugh here} ....

Neenie- you really SHOULD have your DH join!! I mean DMAG used to post a lot more often, but he's generally been scared off - he knew he needed to pop back to apologize because I haven't quite let him live yesterday down yet

i tried selling DH on the idea of it, but he just wasnt feeling it. Maybe i went about it wrong

my argument started out strong... 'theres a bunch of cool guys on the site, you'd get along great with them'... 'instead of it being MY obsession, we could share...' but that somehow turned into 'and then you can Publicly appologize, and you can advertise how wonderful i am.. blah blah blah'... and i think thats where i lost him

Oh, Felicia, I think we are definitely married to the same guy.

I, too, was made to see the Hitchhiker's Guide. I, in fact, was made to read the first book in advance of going to see the Hitchhiker's Guide, which I have to say did absolutely nothing towards my understanding the film because they skipped around through the first three books so much it was actually an incomprehensible mish-mash.

I actually fell asleep in the middle of it and then woke up just in time to see the end...

And I'm sorry, but couldn't they just have said 'thanks for all the fish' and layed off the cheesiest cheese that ever cheesed of a theme song????

Doug and I saw it over the weekend. I wanted to see it too, we're huge fans of the books..and we were like 'what?'

The beginning seemed promising..but then all of the truly wonderfully absurd humor from the books (like prosser laying down in front of the bulldozer, to cite an early example) was just SUCKED out of it.

It was so watered down and taken away from the books that fans will hate it, and it was still weird enough and strange and they didn't explain things enough so non fans will not get a damn thing about it

like they NEVER explain the towel thing...

and what is with the love story?

OMG Neenie... you are hysterical ..LMAO

Farah - yes there is a touch of Seb in Anthony and vice-versa (great taste in women, questionable taste in other things ).. While I still couldn't bring myself to read the books, but just based on the passages Anthony would read me in bed (yes what a romantic ), I knew it just 'wasn't my thing

That said I just feel badly for the true Douglas Adams fans who LOVED the books and were so royally disappointed with the way the movie panned out.

Don't know what you guys are talking about - I love the books and I loved the movie!

Douglas Adams' family even loved it! There is no specific DEFINITIVE version of the HHGTTG because the Radio version is different than the Books which are different than the BBC TV show. Adams changed it himself 8000 times. In fact, if you read the introduction to the Ultimate book (all 5 books in one volume), he himself says that the first book is like episodes 1,3,5, and 7 (or something like that) of the BBC scripts.

Sorry you guys didn't like it though. DH and I are going back to see it again, because we forgot to bring our towels the first time!

I'm glad you liked it. At least someone found some enjoyment from it.

Ask Felicia (who did not read the book) why they carried towels around the entire movie. She won't know! Why? They never even went into why they were carrying towels. It seems they tried to make a movie they thought would appeal to the fans of the book (who, based on most movie boards I read...hate it) and tried to adapt it for everyone, but left them puzzled instead.

So many plot build-ups only never to be resolved....

What the heck did Humma Kavula have to do with anything in the flick? Just a showcase for Malkovich? They waste a good 20 minutes on his little subplot and never resolve it or mention him again! I liked having him as an additional character, but jeez...

Why did Deep Thought have the 'Point of View' gun? How did Humma Kavula know it was there? If he knew it was there, why didn't just go himself and get it? Also, how did he have the little cube that 'just so happened' to have the coordinates for Magarethia that just happened to be built for the Heart of Gold's secretive 'Improbability Drive'? How Improbable!

Why did they butcher all of Douglas Adams great quotes? I can understand changing them a bit to make them funnier or for a fresh look....but they actually made them un-funny!

...and why the heck was Marvin (quite possibly the character that everyone was looking forward to the most) so lame? His droll whining (that worked so brilliantly in other versions of HHGTTG) was just dumb in the movie?

I could go on and pick apart every scene, but I won't. I don't want to re-live that nightmare of a movie.

I guess it's all in how you look at it. Most fans of the previous version (BBC, books and plays) have had nothing good to say about the movie. It just does not seem very 'Adams'....more 'Jim Carrey'.

Re: My public apology to Felicia

OH my poor dear DH having to relive this movie again

And for the record, I don't even understand WHAT Anthony just WROTE, so NO I'm not the best person to judge this movie. However I did give it a fair chance, and while I don't feel as though I was 'lost' watching the movie, I knew I was 'missing part of a joke' or just missing 'something' .. It wasn't confusing, just.. well, for lack of a better word, just BLAH

The bottom line was as your average moviegoer, I honestly just didn't care - about the characters, the plot, the jokes (or lack thereof) - NONE of it. If anything, I found myself getting more annoyed by it all and actually found it dragged a lot. the dialouge was bad, the stupid romantic subplot was corny and the cheezy special effects made me sleepy

Thank God for the comfy seats , the delicioius candy and popcorn (my grand hurrah before my diet began yesterday) or else the day would have been a total bust

Re: My public apology to Felicia

I'm sorry I made you relive the movie, Felicia and Anthony. Wasn't my intent.

We went with a friend who hadn't read the books, and she enjoyed it, and now wants to read them. So, shrug, No answers for you there.

All I can say is that whenever a book is made into a movie, there are going to be the people who are so in love with the books that the movie will be a disappointment. I can't even tell you how many people are still complaining that the whole 'Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs' business wasn't explained in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (which, btw, JK Rowling even has no problem with).

I dunno, if I'm even mildly entertained I consider it a success - I'm not overly picky. I thought that Sam Rockwell was a Dead On Zaphod. The segments with excerpts from the Guide itself were a highlight for me - I wasn't sure how they were going to translate that to the screen, and really liked how they did it.

But what would I know, I think the US version of 'The Office' is pretty funny.

And on a related note -- I'm not sure if you would care or not, but Kevin Smith has given GLOWING recommendation to 'Revenge of the Sith'. He says that this movie is the movie we were all waiting for, and that it makes up for the other two. And if you know anything about Kevin Smith, you know he's all about the Star Wars.

ETA: on the Humma Kavula bit - I think they left some things open for a sequel? Who knows now though, considering how much so many fans hate it...

Ooh Anthony is going to be THRILLED to read this - he LOOOVES Star Wars (and Kevin Smith for that matter)

Me, I'm not much for Star Wars either - its a wonder that Dh and I wound up together, isn't it!
