He's up there, sounds like he's ripping up papers or something!

Our exterminator came and said they love anchoveys (sp?)

UPDATE!!!

THE RACOON TOOK THE ANCHOVEY'S OUT OF THE TRAP WITHOUT SETTING THE TRAP OFF! WHAT A SMARTY PANTS!

However, we're pretty sure he went out the window (we left it open hoping he'd go out for food). It's been really quite, he'd probably gone! YAY!

I spoke to a friend of mine who happens to be a big wig at the Long Island Game Farm... he said to put some peanut butter rat poision out for the 3 that keep getting into my garbage. They are considered pests and killing them is A OK.

What were you going to do with it once you have it in the trap???

Re: My racoon is awake!!!

i would do what kathy is doing and trap them humanely.

Re: My racoon is awake!!!

We would never kill them...at first when we weren't sure what it was, the exterminator mentioned that it could possibly be a rodent, and we should but snap traps down...my DH and I both said, 'Absolutely not!'

It's one thing if there's an infestation and nothing can be done humanely.

We thought that he was gone...nope, we heard him again last night, so we are modifying the trap.

Once he is trapped, we'll release him in the ravine next to our home, where he lives.
He won't get back in the house, because my DH won't make the mistake of leaving the skylight window open at night (the racoon crashed right throught the screen of the skylight...the screen snapped in half!)

Re: My racoon is awake!!!

Please be careful if you have other pets - those racoons can be dangerous to them! My father's (lives in FL) neighbor had one somewhere in the house. Well the raccoon attacked and killed the family pets. The family walked into a massacre sight, blood, etc all over.

THe raccoon is trapped in an unfinished part of the house...there's no way he can get out, but you are absolutely right..they can kill pets if threatened.

Good, I'm glad your pets are safe

Good luck in getting him out of your house

Egad. I guess they don't keep racoon's in cages there anymore. (I used to work there...so I wouldn't put that mentality past anyone there - especially the owners.)

Jordan he told me that even the local wildlife people would take them from you then kill them. I asked if he could capture it and release it when he went out hunting, he said they are a nucance (sp?) animal and they dont keep them alive if caught.

That stinks!!!! I guess if it had rabies or something I could understand...

Re: My raccoon is awake!!!

Depends who you speak to, but I don't believe they should be killed..there are a few things you can do if they are ripping apart your garbage before resorting to lethal methods...try pouring a little ammonia on your garbage bag when you take it out at night, or on the curbside next to the trash..they hate the smell and will keep away from the trash.

I think it's horrible what some of these exterminators do to raccoons/squirrels when caught...there's a few in particular who say they'll remove them and let them go, and they actually drown the animals and sell their pelts.

Re: My raccoon is awake!!!

It is horrible. Ive been putting hot sauce on my garbage cans... being prego I stay away from amonia. It stinks cause I have to keep putting it on cause it drys but it keeps them away. We have 3 raccoons... they were getting into our dogs food the other morning, my dogs chased them into a tree... to me they are a nusance but I cant kill anything but mosquitos

In the area where they used to have the monkeys, they had a few racoons on 'display' (much like the monkey's) in a cage - is what I was referring to.

Sorry, I have no respect for people who make a living off the exploitation of animals, claim to be reputable and compassionate towards animals and then tell people to kill (what they consider to be) nuisances/pests. There's a disconnect there that I just don't get.
