My wedding is on Rosh Hashanah!

My wedding is on Rosh Hashanah!

So when I booked my wedding date, I didn't think to consult the jewish calendar...there's not much I can do about it now. I'm half Jewish, but my family doesn't usually observe the holidays

But as I sent my 'STD' cards, I am finding that a few people can't come because of teh holiday!

FH and I are going to review the guest list tonight and find out if there are others that will not be able to come to the wedding...I can't believe this is happening! I have many other friends who are jewish that casually celebrate some of the holidays.

We can't change the date at this point...so I'm praying everything just works itself out.\

Any helpful advice from any jewish girls would be appreciated..and it's also ok if I'm just sh1t out of luck!

Oh man! How annoying! We're Jewish too but very very reformed (more 'cultural jews' as I say) but if it were my cousin's or friends wedding I'd DEF skip the holiday - hopefully they'll do the same for you.

I mean C'MON you only get married once - it's just ONE year, right? Good luck!!

aw im sorry to hear that your upset ... im getting married on a holiday too and even tho its not a religious one its a national one and some people have already made comments about not being able to attend because of their 'usual 4th of july plans' ... i think that those people who love you and want to be there will be there no matter what ... i hope that helps!

WOW! Well at least you'll know who to send a Christmas card to next year. Jeez!

We're Hindu and my cousin got married Easter weekend a few years ago. We were surprised, but A LOT of their Christian friends came to the wedding... even plenty from out of town.

Don't stress too much!

excuse my ignorance but what kind of holiday is rosh hashanah? Is it a celebratory one or an observance to those that lost their lives?

I didn't realize that until you wrote it. I don't have any Jewish friends....but if roles were reversed and I was invited to a wedding 'Good Friday', I would go...though technically it's a day of mourning and no meat or drinking.

I'd skip the observance for a once in a lifetime event (and I'm fairly devout Catholic). I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks sooo much for the positive words! I'm feeling better about this already =)

I think you have to be very understanding of people who may not come due to the Holiday -- I myself barely attend temple on regular Saturdays but I attend services on the Holidays and usually don't go to work or anything. If I were invited to a wedding on your day, I hate to say, I would probably have to decline.

The Jewish New Year - one of the more religious holidays.

is it the 1st or 2nd day?

i went to a friend's wedding once on Rosh Ha Shona when it ended, and also Yom Kippur when it ended. I think Yom Kippur is the more religious one though....

It's on the 19th - I think it's the first..not as serious as Yom Kippur.

I am not Jewish but I hope everything works out.

look on the bright side: it's a party holiday, as opposed to yom kippur, which was when i unwittingly had my e-party. none of my jewish guests came.

Unless they are religious and spend the holiday in temple, they should have no problem going to your wedding. At least it isn't on Yom Kippur, the day of atonement where they fast!! Good luck..hopefully they can make it!.

I actually have jewish friends and when I was looking at RH's I originally wanted 9/19 but one of the BM's told me it was a jewish holiday and I immediatley emailed them and one said she would go and the other said he wouldnt be able to attend so I changed the date to the 12th.

Well, Rosh Hashanah is not exactly a 'party' holiday. It is the new year, but it is also the beginning of the period from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur where religious Jews repent for their sins of the past year. Together, these two holidays are known as 'The High Holidays' because they are the 2 most important holidays that a Jew can observe.

As for the wedding being on Rosh Hashanah - I don't think there's too much you can do. If you are inviting Jewish people, then they have to decide how to observe that day. Even the 'less religious/observant' Jews usually celebrate the first day (your wedding day). But maybe if your wedding is later in the day they will choose to go to temple in the morning and your wedding in the evening?

So far, only five people said they can't make it. We know that there's always going to be a number of people who can't come no matter what...so we're sticking with teh date and moving forward.

We're gonna treat it as a holiday and just send invites out a little earlier than normal

Listen, don't fret. I had a cousin who married on GOOD FRIDAY which to us is like the most holy day of the year. And I have to say a lot of people showed up and it was one of the most beautiful ceremonies / weddings I have ever been to!
