Name change

Name change

Hi All,

I am getting married this weekend and I wanted to 'try' to get a jump start on filling out any paperwork necessary for when I come back from our honeymoon.

Can someone please walk me through the process of changing my last name, where to go first with what form, any payments due, proof of identity, etc..

Any and all advice is very much appreciated!

When you get the stamped copy (official) of your marriage license that gets mailed right after the wedding, you can go to the DMV (they should have a form on their website) first. After the DMV, you can go to Social Security because you have a current ID with your new last name. Once you change all these, you can go to your bank, change all your accounts and then call your credit cards and have them change the name. Usually credit companies change the names over the phone. Hope this helps!! Good Luck this weekend!! [L=http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/idlicense.htm]

P.S.- I think it's like $5.00 to change your name

You don't need a new id with your new last name to go to social security, you can go once you get your official marriage certificate. You can also find the forms you need to do this online like DMV.

After you change your name at SS, make sure to change your name at your place of employment and bank to avoid any issues. After you change your name at DMV, make sure to change your name with your car insurance provider.

I did credit cards and frequent flier accounts last at my leisure (still doing some of them).

Other than filling out the short forms for SS and DMV, you can't really do much else until you get the actual copy of the marriage certificate.

I did the DMV first, you dont need anything with your new name except for you marriage license to change you license and your ss card.
For DMV you will need, your old license, ss card, marriage license, proof of address (if you are changing it) and birth certificate...you need 6 points. Look on the web, they should have the list there.

Otherwise, you can change everything else after you do SS and your DL

Do you remember how long it took for your official license to come in the mail?

Someone told me it takes about 15 days, and someone else told me it can take up to 6 weeks.

It has been about 25 days and I still haven't received anything in the mail.

Also, do I need to take the one I receive in the mail to the social security office, or can I use the paper I received from the church the day of the wedding. (the one with the maid of honor/best man witness signatures)

Mine took forever-but it got lost in the mail. You have to take the official one to SS-the one you get in the mail

ETA:Wait a few more days and then call the Town Clerk that you went to. See if they received it or not, if they havent call the church/officiant that over saw your wedding and see when they sent it. I had plenty of issues with this.
