i know this was asked about a year ago, but i don't remember what the outcome was.
to change one's last name is a fairly simple task. however, i am going to be adding my new last name onto my maiden name, and i've heard some brides have run into problems when doing this.
so for example, say my name is 'lauren elizabeth jones' and my husband's name is 'michael anthony smith.' my new name will be 'lauren elizabeth jones smith.' no hyphen. so in effect, my maiden name would now be my second middle name.
do i need to go to court or something in order to do this? TIA.

Re: name 'change'
I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think you just have to write what your new last name(s) will be on your application for your marriage license.

actually a 2010er responded to my other post and she's an attorney and she said it's a completely different process and costs $210. however, FH and i won't be living in NY so perhaps it will be different where we are.

If you apply for your marriage license in NYS you cannot have 2 middle names. The info the 2010 girl gave you is accurate you have to go to court and legally change your middle name to your maiden name. I do not think the state will let you have 2 middle names. I know one '09 girl was able to put her maiden and married last name on the application form without the hyphen but I was not able to do that.

well wait there's some confusion here. the 2010er was correct, but she said you can have two middle names, there'e just more to it. she's doing the same thing, has already researched it, and is an attorney. the state will let you have two middle names but you need to fill out the legal name change forms and the process is complicated and expensive, but can be done. it's not as simple changing last names, but it can be done. she also sent me the link for it.

Ok....I don't understand why the state cares so much. Why can't a person have 2 middle names? It is so stupid that that make you go through all of this! I don't want to drop my last name. So I have to pay and go to court to get it legally changed? I think thats ridiculous!!
