Name Change
Hi Ladies!I was wondering if any of you (or anyone you know) changed your middle name to your maiden name when you took your husband's last name? I'm researching this and everything I've read said you can't do that in New York State unless you petition to the court for a legal name change. Some sources say that as long as you do your SS card and passport first, the DMV will change it accordingly, but if they DON'T you're basically screwed.
FH and I are going to get our marriage license on Friday, so I need to figure out what to put as my new last name. If I can't make my middle name my maiden name, I'll have to hyphenate. Losing my maiden name is NOT an option. Blahh.

Do you have to make it official? I'm just going to take FH's name officially and legally, and then just kinda use my maiden name as my middle name. I don't feel like middle names are super important, so I don't feel like I need to legally change my middle name. I'll just use it that way.

I hear ya on not wanting to drop your last name completely so I would like to know this as well. I think I am set in stone that I will not completely eliminate my last name lol

It's set in stone for me too! I'm going to ask for advice when I go for the license on Friday. Worse comes to worst I'll get it legally changed in court. I don't care if I jump through hoops of fire, my name stays!

Re: Name Change
My friend (a NYS resident) did that last year. Your second comment is correct: as long as SS card and passport are done first, the DMV will allow it.

Larlynn I feel the same. I love my last name (only my family has my last name in the whole world) & my FH's name is soooo popular. The only reason why I will most likely hyphen it is so when we have kids we will have the same last name. Dropping it all together is NOT an option.

Let me know what they say. Think you had to do it when u get your marriage license.I remember asking if my marriage license didnt say his last name or if I decided to take it later she said it would cost around a thousand. So I just took. But wonder If that applies for hyphenating as well. Keep me posted.
