Name Change help PLEASE

Please, please help. I am getting so frustrated with this whole name change thing. I sent a check to get certified copies of my marriage certificate 2 months ago and have not gotten them yet. I sent SS a copy of my marriage cert and application and it was returned saying I had to go to the Brooklyn office in person. I'm so frustrated!!!

For those ladies who live in Bklyn or Manhattan, a few basic questions:

1. do you need to go in person to the SS office and DMV to get your name changed?
2. If so, how long does it take to get your new documentation?
3. Do you need to bring original certified copies of your marriage certificate and if so, do they give them right back, or do they return them to you by mail?
4. for your passport, is it true that you can only send the application by mail with an original certified copy and they will return it by mail?

I'm off tomorrow and I would like to try to get as much done as possible? Is there anything I can do in person tomorrow?

HELP, help, help, help!!

New SS cards take 10-14 buisness dyas to get.. thats when you go down to SS admin.

With the SS office, there's a rule that all Brooklyn residents must go to the Brooklyn SS office, not the Manhattan one. I'm not sure if you can handle the SS stuff through the mail if you're a Brooklyn resident. I went to the Manhattan office (b/c I didn't want to mail my marriage certificate to them) and got my marriage certificate back right away. It took about 2 weeks to get my new SS card. I live in CT, but I think you have to go to the NY DMV in person b/c they take a new picture on your license. Make sure you bring your marriage certificate. I think NY DMV charges you for a new license (it was free in CT and I got my new license that day). You should get your marriage certificate back that day. The DMV and SS office require certified copies of the marriage certificate. I did everything in person so I didn't need to order additional copies of the cerificate. Good luck.

1. In Manhattan, you do need to go to the SS office and DMV in person to get your name changed.

2. It takes about 2-4 weeks to get the new SS card and driver's license. I did get both of mine within 2 weks.

3. You need to bring the original married certificate, but they give them back to you right away if you go in person.

4. Yes, it's true you can only do it by mail with the original certified copy. I also sent in for extra certified copies, but never got them. So I did my passport name change last - I sent in my one original copy of the certificate and got it back with the new passport.
