I just got married a couple of weeks ago and I went to DMV, Social Security, and mailed in my passport- now the tricky part NYS department of Education- in my experience they are usually really slow with everything!
What do you do to get a teaching license in your new name? I was only able to find out how to request a duplicate if you lost yours which is completely different!

How do I change my name or update my social security number?
After you have logged into TEACH and you are on your homepage, click the 'Verify/Update Profile' link, then click the 'enter/edit personal info.' button. Click the 'Request Name Change' button to request that your name be changed. Click the 'Request a SSN Update' button to request that your social security number be updated.
For both requests, you must mail a copy of the documentation that supports your request. For example, if you request a name change, mail us a copy of your marriage license or divorce decree etc. If you requested a social security number update, mail a copy of your social security card.

Do they automatically mail you a new certificate with your new name or does that just change your name on the online TEACH website? I ask b/c I'll have to give a copy of my certificates in my new name to my school secretory when school starts.

I think they send you a new one but I am unsure. Call here to ask questions: Phone: (518) 474-3901 Staff are available to answer questions: 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. EST Monday through Friday. For automated information, call anytime.
My questions for you: Do we have to change our name on our teaching licenses? If we do change it on our license, do you think we could still go by our maiden names in the classroom? I will be taking his last name ... but for work, only, I'd still like to use my last name in the classroom.

I'm going to take fh name, but professionally I'm going to keep my maiden name. It just makes things eisier. I'm not going to change my teaching license either.

Great original post!! I actually would like to use my maiden name in the classroom also. I was under the impression that once your license was issued you were not able to change your name. But this new info is good to know! My teaching license will definitely be the LAST thing I change because I'm so afraid of any confusion it might cause with the state.
