How many LI brides will be taking their husband's last name? And, what are the 'rules' on hyphenated names? Would my maiden name become my middle name?

Yabbo: for the marriage license their is a line you have to print your name and it asks will you change your name and if so what will your name be and you fill out what it will be.

I.E., Print: Jane Doe
will you change your name if so what will it be Jane Smith

And if you have any questions before writing on the license you can always ask the person behind the counter

Haven't decided, and won't decide until after the wedding (I have too much else to think about). But I will either have a last name:

mylastname-hislastname (no, his will not become my middle name)

or I will keep mine.

Our kids will have both of ours.

I changed it too.

Legally I am Vicki Maidenname Hislastname. That's what it says on my SS card, and whenever I fill out paper work I always put the first initial of my maiden name in the space for Middle initial, since that is now my middle name.

To everyone else, I am just Vicki Hislastname.

I didn't want to hypenate for two reasons: My name would be just waaaay too long, and I didn't want to always have to sign my name with both last names whenever I wrote a check or signed a document.

I'm changing mine... mainly because we plan on having children. But I'm going to have a tiny little name! My first name is one syllable, and my new last name will be one syllable. I didn't like that, since I like my last name the way it is now. Oh well! I'm OK with it... I figure I'll get used to it, right?

We're both hyphenating our names - it's probably gonna be a little annoying to get used to, esp since neither of us has a particularly short last name, but I don't want to give up my last name, and we like the idea of sharing a name.
