Name change problems

I am so frustrated by the name changing process. I still haven't gotten my marriage certificate from the city (they mailed it 10/3 - apparently we have a very lazy mail man) and I can't make any name changes until it arrives. So basically all our checks made out so adorably to Mr & Mrs Garcia are sitting in a box in the house.

I'm mainly worried that the changes to our insurance benefits won't be valid because we have a 30 day window from the date of the wedding to provide the documentation.

So if it's lost in the mail I have to go there AGAIN and pay $25 to get a certified copy. I hate everything lol.

Anyone else going through this??

I haven't attempted to change my name yet since I hear it's a pain in the butt, but we were able to deposit all our checks the Monday after the wedding regardless of its saying Mr & Mrs Blahblah into our shared account. I'd call your bank, it shouldn't be a problem (we used Capital One)

You will be able to cash your checks if you have a joint account. What would the ladies do if they are not changing their name?

For checks made out to Mr. & Mrs. New Name: Your husband must sign them, and you will then sign them 2 times (married and maiden name).

I hope you get your marriage license soon. PO is getting worse and worse.

Capital one said no to me. I'm equally frustrated by the lack of universal policies.

And we both signed the checks me with my maiden name and he with his...regular name. and they said no because my maiden name wasn't on the check - our joint account has both our names with my maiden name.

So annoying.

we are having issues with name change due to social security being closed.... we can't reapply for star, possibly the DMV, etc etc. anything where they need your name and social security number--- because they would have to match.

You don't need your SS number for DMV. I went there before SS and I had no problems. Just remember to bring your car title so you can change your registration at the same time.

I would call another Capital One bank and ask for a manager. It sounds like the one you go to doesn't know what they are doing.

i hope so, because DW's license expires monday so either she will have to pay 2x and change it 2x or she will have to hang out at the social security office & The DMV all day on her birthday lol (IF the shutdown is over)

What a pain in the @ss!

I went to the Capital One in Albertson (IU Willets & Wills ave). If the check was to Mr & Mrs BlahBlah, then He signed 'Christopher BlahBlah' and I signed 'Jessica M BlahBlah'. We wrote 'for deposit only' underneath. If the check was just to him he just signed, just to me with my maiden name then I signed with my maiden name.

we waited a couple weeks to see how the name changes worked out before going to the bank. i think this is the reason one bounced.... LOL (people cant keep track of their accounts that long!)

Our joint account is with capital one and we had no problem depositing checks that said Mr. and Mrs new last name.

Speak w/ a manager like suggested above.

We deposited all our checks at bethpage credit union with no problems. I signed with my married name unless the check was made out to my maiden name.

Social Security is back today!!!

Had no issues with DMV or the bank with name change.

I guess I have the worst luck. Currently waiting for a call back from a regional manager at the bank. It turns out they accepted some checks made out to mr & mrs but not others?

Still no license. And if it's lost in the mail we have to go back to the marriage bureau and pay $25 for a copy.

Hi,
My marriage license came very recently from NYC, over 2 months after the wedding.

Maybe try different branches? I had no prob at all at one, husband came with me, we put him on the account, and they only wanted one signature.

I ended up having to go back to that branch when another branch was more picky with another group of checks.

And some I put in through my phone - that system seems to take everything.

I haven't even attempted the name change, since I waited so long for the license and then no SS office.

2MONTHS?!!?! OMG! Do you know how long it took to arrive once they mailed it?

I'm praying it doesn't take that long but I'm getting more and more pissed everyday when I open the mailbox and it's not there. None of the changes I need to make with work records will be valid unless I can present the doc by October 27th.

My officiant sent me the signed license the day after the ceremony and our bank took that as the documentation, so we didn't need to wait for the official cert from the town. If you have that, maybe your job will accept that as well?

our maitre d actually helped our officiant make a copy the night of, in case we needed it for honeymoon perks! (we did not)

Ours took 2 weeks to come. I'm hoping to get to social security on Monday. That's the last piece of the name change puzzle for me.
