Name Change Protocol?????

Hi Ladies,

I'm sure this most likely already posted, however, I need some help!!!! Does anyone know how to go about the actual name change? I changed it on my marriage license but how do I now go about legally changing it?? Do I go to DMV or Social Security? I'm lost.

((also, i've been living in jersey so that complicated everything))

I actually just did this this morning! Your credit cards you can just call them and have them change it and mail you a new card with your new name.

I went to Social Security and the DMV this morning w/ my marriage license in hand! It took me a total of 2 hours for both, which wasn't terrible. They mail you a new SS card and new license in a couple of weeks.

did you have to hand them over your old license? The reason I ask is I was planning on doing all of this the day after the wedding so that it was all done by the time I got back from the HM. Plus I took that day off.

You can't change your name right after the wedding. You have to wait until you get your marriage license back in the mail which can take up to 2-3 weeks sometimes after the wedding.

Yes, definitely go to SS first then go to DMV. You really can't do anything til it's recorded w/ SS. Now that I did it, I am gonna go to my bank and change my accounts and all. You have to wait til your official marriage license comes in the mail. We lucked out - ours was waiting for us when we got home from the HM so I was able to jump on this right away. You prob won't need an entire day off, just an hour or 2.

Not necessarily, I did the bank first then SS then DMV. It just happened I could get to the bank first.
Had no problems doing it this way. As long as you have your marriage certificate you can go to either one first. Noone holds onto it.

Oh ok great! Thanks ladies. Can I go to a Social Security Place in NJ? Or do I have to go in NY since that's where i'm from??? I know, i'm clueless.
