name change Q - does SS keep

my marriage license ? I was hoping to pop over to DMV right after...
Thanks

I'm not sure if it's the same in NY, but when I got my name changed in Massachusetts, I was told it took 24 hours for your name change to be updated in the SS database. The DMV needs to verify that your name was changed with SS in order to change it on your drivers license, so you might want to wait until the following day.

I was lucky because mine updated right away, but at first the clerk couldn't find it and told me I might need to come back the following day. Even though i had my marriage certificate and my receipt from social security, she said it had to show my new name in the system.

Again, not sure if it's the same in NY, but wouldn't want you to make an unnecessary trip and wait in line for all the time only to find out you can't do it.

HTH!
