I had a difficult time with this too. I'm the last in the line of my family name and we don't have any boys to carry on the name. This depressed me for a while. I didn't want to change my name for a multitude of reasons swirling around in my head. DH and I touched on the subject lightly a couple of times and I understood he wanted me to change my name. I told him my thought in a short through way and he also understood. I told him that I would change my name but it had to be on my own terms. We were married in June and I didn't officially change my name until October. I'm still in the process of changing things over. I do not regret changing it. Even though I recall telling my dad as a little girl that I would never change my name.

Re: Name changing
If you are thinking of having children have you ever thought about making your son or daughter's first name your maiden name? I think that it a great way to honor your parents. I also think making your middle name your maiden name is a good idea.

I'm not changing my last name and instead FH is taking mine. His family made up their last name when they moved to this country so it doesn't have a value to them.Definitely keep talking things out and good luck.
wow this is awesome!!

I was adopted too. I know it wont bother my parents if i change my name, i did it for my first marriage as well. They know how i feel about them. Plus my last name is a girls first name and after 34 yrs Im done with it lol. I hate people messsing up my names.

I also do not want to change my name, but my FH wants me too. My reasons are more for professional things, but I also am not the biggest fan of his last name. So we decided that I'll keep my name for work stuff and go by his last name socially. But if it really means that much to you, sit down and talk to him. Make him realize how important it is and I'm sure he will come around.
I feel the same way! I just paid HUNDREDS of dollars to NY State for my teaching licenses and the last thing I want to do is give them another penny to have my licenses changed!!
I'm thinking of hyphenating legally so that I don't have to change all of my documents!! Although that would give me a 20 letter last name!
