Name some stores from when you were a kid that you loved but are now OOB

Original post by ambersmom

I used to love, love, love TSS. We used to go to the one in Hempstead and I thought it was soo cool when we parked on the top of the store and took the escalator down. I can still remember every inch of that store, even to how it smelled.

I used to love Woolworth's. I got my first pet hamster there. You could shop for a pet, school supplies, just about anything and then stop at their restuarant and have a strawberry shake and crinkle fries all for a buck and a half. Ahhh... the good ole days

What about Gertz, that was in Commack, also Consumers. You would look through a catalog and place the number on a piece of paper and turn it in and then when the item came down the conveyor belt they would call your last name. Also Service Merchandise.

was consumers the same thing as service merchandise? same conecpt at least. it was located in huntington where buy buy baby is now.

Does Richie Rich count?
There used to be so many mom and pop stores, that are all gone now.

I think only the Queens Village/Bellerose girls would know that one!!!

TSS was the first place I got lost!!
Our TSS was so cool though because it was connected to the Food Town next door and you could walk right from TSS right into Foodtown withought even leaving the store - I thought that was the coolest thing in the world!!

Was that the one in Levittown?

Definitely was!! My uncle used to be the 'security guard' who worked the little opening inbetween stores... He used wear a ridiculous uniform and to stand there with a stapler and staple your bags!! My brother and I used to laugh at him everytime we went there!

My mom and I still talk about how we miss that FoodTown. That was our favorite supermarket. We were also very upset when Borders left. We used to go there all the time. So what are they putting there now.. a Home Depot??

Well Home depot bought a lot of the kmarts. We thought for sure Kmart wouldnt sell that property cause the owned it. They didn't rent that building. SO I heard A home Depot is going there my mom heard it will be a home depot expo. It seams wierd that they would put a home depot so close to the one in east meadow. And they arent gonna close the one in East Meadow since they are doing so much work on it. So im really not sure but it will be one or the other.

Does anyone remember Courtesy? In my neighborhood it turned into Rockbottom years ago and now it's Duane Reade.

Oh yeah, and what about Fotomat?

A&P Supermarket

Still have those in NJ too.

And a spin off of A&P called Food Basics which is all wholesale and super cheap. They don't carry every single thing like a regular supermarket would (for ex, they will have Tide and All detergent but not Clorox. ) Saves us about 50%!
