I want to name our parents on our invitation, but FH doesn't because he feels like it's too wordy. (My parents are divorced and mom is remarried so there is one extra name than usual)
What do you think is proper?

Re: Naming Parents on Invitation? - Poll
I actually spoke to my parents and FH's parents about it, and they both found it disrespectful.. i was asking because some invites had a saying 'together with their parents...etc...etc...' which they still found disrepectful... should you ask your FILs and your parents and see if they don't mind either way?

Re: Naming Parents on Invitation? - Poll
I think the general consensus has more to do with whether or not they are hosting and/or paying for your wedding, not how many names there are. Even if they're not hosting or paying, you can include the names if you want.
In our case, FH and I are paying for our wedding ourselves. We decided to put 'Together with their parents' because they raised us and have helped and supported us throughout our entire lives so we wanted to mention them at least in that way.

I'm a little conservative, and generally quite traditional - I feel its disrespectful.

Re: Naming Parents on Invitation? - Poll
Traditionally it's who is footing the bill.
I wanted to name my parents and FHs mom to honor them. FHs parents are divorced and originally his father wasn't going to make it to the wedding, now he is going to attend. So that changes how we do the invites, for many reasons I don't want to 'honor' FHs father, if he attends and only FHs mother is on the invite it could cause some difficulty.
If your parents are paying for the wedding, I think it is disrespectful to leave them off of the invite, they are hosting the event. If you are paying for it then it's up to you, you can put them on it to honor them or you can leave it off.

Re: Naming Parents on Invitation? - Poll
We are putting 'Together with their parents' on our invitation, but I still think it's disrespectful not to include their names on it, no matter how wordy it is! Maybe if we were an older couple that would be different, but we're 26 and 27.

Re: Naming Parents on Invitation? - Poll
We didn't name our parents/ We were originally going to write 'Together with their parents', but my parents agreed that the wording sounded better without it.

Re: Naming Parents on Invitation? - Poll
we named both sets of parents, even though we paid for the wedding entirely, I know it meant alot to them

Re: Naming Parents on Invitation? - Poll
My understanding was that the way the wording is on the invitation implies who was footing the bill.
For us, we put, 'Together With Their Parents' as to imply that we paid for the majority but the parents helped out here and there.

Re: Naming Parents on Invitation? - Poll
We wrote 'Together With Their Families'
DH and I foot about 70 % of the bill and we are both adults who have lived away from home for a long time, we didn't think it was necessary to mention the parents by name. It's obviously a personal choice though!

Re: Naming Parents on Invitation? - Poll
If you are paying for everything compltely on your own than I don't think it is necessary to list your parents names, but if they are involved in any of the money or decision making then I think they should be on there.

Re: Naming Parents on Invitation? - Poll
It's funny I never thought that I was traditional until we ordered our invitations the other day! lol
Even though we're paying for it with my parents help, we put the names of everyone on the invitations - even his late mom. We did it like this
Mr. & Mrs. X X Request the honour of your presence At the marriage uniting their daughter...
Missy to Jay
Son of Mr. & Mrs. X X And the late Mrs. X X
HTH!

Re: Naming Parents on Invitation? - Poll
Both of our parents are divorced and 3 are remarried so we have 7 parents.
We wanted to do together with our parents but then felt bad because our parents are paying for it.
I had a feeling my mom would have an issue and when I spoke to her about it, she insisted on being named on the invite.
So our invite says: Mr and Mrs XXXXXXXXXXXXXX Mr and Mrs XXXXXXXXXXXXXX Ms XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Mr and Mrs XXXXXXXXXXXXXX request the honour of your presence
Luckily we had liked a long rectangular invitation anyway, so we had the room!

Re: Naming Parents on Invitation? - Poll
FH and I didn't write our parents names at all...I am 31 and he is 35...his father lives in Chile, my dad is deceased and his Mom was dying of cancer as the wedding was approaching...
We made an adult decision to get married at this time in our lives and are paying for the entire event. My Mom was grateful that we didn't include their names and found our invitation romantic...
We wrote:
Because you have shared in their lives You are invited to share in their new life together
Me & FH will exchange marriage vows on Sunday, the first of July 2007
Church 3PM
and then a small quote on the bottom
'I have found the one my heart loves' Song of Solomon...
It was the right move for us...

Re: Naming Parents on Invitation? - Poll
I am paying for 95% of our wedding and my parents are not on good terms right now so we didn't list anyone's names. I left it purposefully vague because I knew no matter how careful I was someone would be offended. It reads:
You are invited to share in a celebration of love at the wedding of Amy and Louis

Re: Naming Parents on Invitation? - Poll
Well I didn't put either parents' names on the invite (just because I found wording that I really liked and it didn't work with names) and nobody said anything about it (but we are paying for most of the wedding ourselves).
